Political Comments Spark Debate

During the “Chhatron Ki Gunj” event, Gandhi made pointed remarks concerning what he termed the “Manusmriti mindset,” advocating for women’s empowerment and calling on them to “smash patriarchy.” He also directed criticism towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding his comments about female protesters involved in recent agitations at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. This stance drew immediate reactions from rival political factions.

The event incited a flurry of exchange between Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Keshav Upadhye, vice-president of the BJP’s Maharashtra unit, claimed that Gandhi’s speech was filled with generic political rhetoric rather than addressing real student issues. Upadhye further alleged that the crowd was artificially swelled by bringing attendees in college buses.

He characterised the Pune event as a “political comedy show,” challenging Gandhi to reflect on his party’s stance regarding women’s rights in light of their opposition to significant legislations, including the support for President Droupadi Murmu and the ban on triple talaq. According to Upadhye, the Congress party’s approach appears hypocritical in regard to women’s empowerment.

Congress Responds to BJP Criticism

In response to the BJP’s criticism, Congress national secretary Sachin Sawant defended the turnout at Gandhi’s event, suggesting that the BJP had become anxious due to the positive engagement witnessed despite imposed logistical challenges. Sawant emphasised the unprecedented response from the youth, which he attributed to a genuine interest in Gandhi’s message.

Shifting focus to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’s recent interaction with younger constituents in Nagpur, Sawant expressed concerns over the ruling alliance’s perceived negligence of youth prospects in Maharashtra. He implied that the agenda being pushed by the BJP did not resonate with the younger generation’s needs and aspirations.

Sawant concluded with a critique of the BJP’s claims regarding youth representation, suggesting that mere branding does not equate to genuine advocacy for their interests. He underscored the necessity for a more robust and transparent dialogue on issues affecting today’s youth, reinforcing the importance of a progressive approach in political discourse.
