In a very shocking incident a 20-year-old woman, identified as Saniya, tragically died by suicide in Gorakhpur. The incident comes after she allegedly received a phone call from her husband . But to her shock the husband reportedly pronounced ‘triple talaq’ and verbally abused her on the phone.
The series of troubling incidents led Saniya to take her own life. The incident occurred on Monday evening. Shortly after the call from her husband, Salauddin, a resident of Maharashtra Saniya died by suicide. Saniya had allegedly returned to her parents’ home in Gorakhpur on April 26th.
Dowry Harassment Allegations
According to reports, prior to the tragic incident, Saniya’s family had approached the local police with a complaint. They alleged continuous dowry harassment against her husband and in-laws. According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered after Saniya’s death, eight individuals are involved in the case.
This includes her husband Salauddin, his mother, and several siblings. All are accused of subjecting her to ongoing harassment. Saniya got married to Salauddin on August 7, 2023. The family alleged that despite fulfilling dowry demands, the harassment persisted.
Police Negligence
However, despite prior complaints no action was taken by the police. Taking a serious view of alleged negligence in handling the initial complaint, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Grover has suspended Sub-Inspector Jay Prakash Singh.
According to an internal inquiry Saniya’s mother, Asiya, had approached the Chauri Chaura police station. She reported the dowry harassment, but SI Singh allegedly disregarded the complaint and refused to register a case.
Husband’s Call Reportedly Triggered Suicide
According to the FIR, on Monday, Salauddin allegedly called Saniya and pronounced triple talaq. He also verbally abused her. Deeply distressed by the call, Saniya reportedly took her own life later that night. Her mother stated that Saniya had been communicating through her younger sister’s phone. She was struggling with significant mental trauma in the days leading up to her death.
Police Investigation Underway, FIR Registered
Following Saniya’s death, police have registered an FIR against eight individuals, including her husband Salauddin, who resides in Rasayani, Maharashtra, and his family members. The charges relate to dowry harassment and the circumstances leading to Saniya’s death. Senior Superintendent SP Gaurav Grover confirmed the suspension of the sub-inspector.
