Apple To Restrict Dating Apps And Romantic AI Chatbots To Users Aged 18 And Over

The CSR Journal Magazine

Apple is implementing changes to its App Store regulations to enhance the safety of younger users. The company informed app developers on Monday that it will prohibit minors from accessing online dating platforms and artificial intelligence chatbots that contain sexual or romantic content. This new policy will take effect on November 16, requiring developers to utilise updated labels that accurately reflect their app’s age classification.

As a result of these changes, any application designed to facilitate dating or romantic relationships will automatically receive an 18+ age rating. This initiative is part of Apple’s broader strategy to ensure user safety, which has included the introduction of improved parental controls and enhanced age verification features across its platforms.

Impact on AI Companion Apps

The new regulations are expected to have a significant impact on the rapidly expanding market of AI companion applications. While traditional dating apps typically restrict access to users under the age of 18, the new rules will impose stricter limitations on AI-driven platforms, which are increasingly popular among younger demographics. Applications such as Character.AI and Replika allow users to engage in conversations with virtual friends, romantic partners, and imaginative characters.

Last year, xAI introduced 3D animated virtual companions that include adult-oriented features. According to reports, leading AI companion applications were downloaded approximately 220 million times globally across both Apple and Google app stores as of last summer. Following the new regulations, any AI application that provides a romantic or sexual chatbot will be required to carry an 18+ rating.

While the new App Store guidelines will begin to appear on November 16, developers have until January 12, 2027, to fully comply with the updated requirements. This extended deadline allows app makers time to adjust their offerings and ensure adherence to the new age rating system.

Changes to Location Sharing Policies

In addition to the age restrictions, Apple is also enforcing stricter privacy measures regarding location sharing. Under the new rules, any application that shares a user’s real-world location with others must clearly indicate this through specific labels. This initiative aims to prevent situations where users may inadvertently share their location with unfamiliar individuals.

There is a particular update concerning Brazil, where applications that share locations among family members can request an official age rating from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, rather than being automatically assigned the local A16 rating. This adjustment acknowledges the unique context of family-oriented applications in Brazil, allowing for a more tailored approach to age classification.

Overall, these changes reflect Apple’s commitment to user safety and privacy, particularly for younger audiences. By implementing these new rules, the company aims to foster a more secure digital environment while adapting to the evolving landscape of mobile applications.
