Trump Blames Fox News for GOP Midterm Losses, Citing Ratings Drop

The CSR Journal Magazine

US President Donald Trump has publicly condemned Fox News, alleging that the network played a significant role in the Republican Party’s substantial losses during the 2026 midterm elections. He claimed that the network’s decision to provide airtime to Democratic figures and critics of his administration contributed to these electoral setbacks. In a series of posts on Truth Social, Trump specifically targeted former New York City mayor Bill de Blasio, questioning the rationale behind his appearance on the network.

Trump expressed his discontent with de Blasio’s commentary on Fox News, labelling him “the Worst Mayor in the History of New York City.” He claimed that de Blasio’s tenure left New York in a state of disgrace, asserting that the damage caused was “incalculable.” This criticism was part of a broader attack on Fox News, which Trump accused of consistently featuring voices from the Democratic opposition.

Trump’s Claims on Ratings and Donations

In his posts, Trump alleged that Fox News had experienced a 27 per cent drop in ratings, attributing this decline to the network’s focus on Democratic critics. He stated that former viewers of Fox News had recognised the shift in content and were no longer tuning in. Trump asserted that his own popularity remained high, claiming that his numbers were better than ever.

Additionally, Trump questioned the financial contributions made by Fox Corp to Democratic politicians and organisations. He named several prominent Democrats, including House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Representatives Jamie Raskin, Ted Lieu, and Pete Aguilar, while also referencing various Democratic campaign committees. Trump suggested that these donations were indicative of the network’s declining ratings and warned that viewership could continue to fall.

Trump also dismissed Fox News polling, labelling the questions as a “hit job” and the responses as “BULLSHIT.” He expressed his frustration with specific contributors, notably Jessica Tarlov, stating that he could not tolerate her voice and would change the channel during her segments.

Hannity Acknowledges Anti-Trump Sentiment

Trump’s criticisms of Fox News coincided with remarks from Sean Hannity, a prominent host on the network and a known supporter of the President. Hannity acknowledged that widespread public animosity towards Trump had significantly influenced the election results. He remarked that the intensity of opposition to Trump was unprecedented, stating, “Hatred is a hell of a motivator.” Hannity’s comments reflected an understanding within conservative media circles that strong anti-Trump sentiment mobilised voters against the Republican Party.

This acknowledgment from Hannity, a key figure in conservative media, suggests a recognition of the challenges faced by the Republican Party in the wake of the midterm elections. The combination of Trump’s criticisms and Hannity’s observations highlights a complex landscape for Fox News as it navigates its relationship with both its audience and the political climate.

As the Republican Party seeks to regroup following the electoral defeat, the internal dynamics between Trump and Fox News may continue to evolve, influencing future strategies and media engagements. The implications of these developments could have lasting effects on the party’s direction and its interactions with the media landscape.
