CNG Installations Surge by 50 Per Cent in NCR Following Delhi’s Vehicle Restrictions

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent implementation of restrictions on non-Delhi-registered BS-IV vehicles has led to a significant increase in demand for CNG installation centres in Noida, Ghaziabad, and Gurugram. Operators in these areas have reported a surge of up to 50 per cent in installations as vehicle owners seek to convert their existing cars to CNG rather than invest in new vehicles. The restrictions, effective from November 1, 2026, will remain in place until January 31, 2027, and prohibit the operation of vehicles registered outside Delhi that do not comply with BS-VI emission standards.

These measures specifically target BS-IV and older petrol and diesel vehicles, while CNG and electric vehicles, along with certain emergency vehicles, are exempt. This has prompted vehicle owners in the National Capital Region (NCR) to reassess their transportation options, particularly those who frequently travel to Delhi for work or education.

Cost-Effective Conversion Options

Shakti Singh, a car expert affiliated with a CNG installation service in Sector 122, Noida, indicated that demand for conversions has increased markedly in the last fortnight. He noted that the cost of converting a vehicle to CNG starts at around ₹35,000, making it an attractive option for middle-class families, especially those with single small cars. Singh also highlighted that environmental concerns and a sense of personal responsibility towards reducing pollution are motivating factors for some customers.

In Ghaziabad, another CNG installer reported that their establishment had converted four to five vehicles in just a few days, a notable increase compared to the usual rate of installations over an entire week. Similarly, a CNG installer in Karnal observed a rise of 25-30 per cent in installations, alongside an uptick in follow-up inquiries from customers who had previously shown interest.

Yatin Bansal from Car Craft in Sector 83, Noida, confirmed an almost 50 per cent increase in daily inquiries regarding CNG installations. Many customers who initially sought information have returned to schedule appointments and discuss the registration process. Bansal explained that the cost for installing CNG in BS-IV vehicles typically ranges from ₹35,000 to ₹50,000, while for BS-VI vehicles, it can be between ₹50,000 and ₹70,000. Most inquiries are from middle-class vehicle owners citing the new entry restrictions as a primary reason for considering conversion.

Impact of Air Quality Concerns

The deteriorating air quality in Delhi, classified as ‘very poor’ and ‘severe’, has intensified scrutiny of vehicles entering the city. The Air Quality Index recently surpassed the 400 mark, leading to long queues at entry points as authorities enforce the new restrictions. Commuters from neighbouring cities have reported significant delays, with many spending hours waiting to enter the national capital.

Parents travelling to drop their children at schools in Delhi, along with office-goers, have been particularly affected by the traffic congestion. The Bharat Stage emission standards, which regulate the pollutants emitted by vehicles, have evolved over the years. BS-IV norms were first introduced in Delhi-NCR and 13 other major cities in April 2010 and became mandatory for new vehicles across the country from April 2017. India transitioned directly from BS-IV to the stricter BS-VI standards, which came into effect nationwide on April 1, 2020.

Deshraj from RB Autos, who has been in the CNG installation business for two decades, confirmed a notable increase in inquiries following the restrictions. He remarked that while seasonal demand typically rises during pollution months, this year’s surge appears more pronounced, with more vehicle owners approaching installation centres than in previous years. The latest restrictions have heightened concerns about compliance and air quality, prompting many to consider CNG as a viable alternative.
