Woman Escapes After Allegedly Enduring Brutal Abuse and Captivity

The CSR Journal Magazine

A woman in Madhya Pradesh’s Rajgarh district has successfully escaped from what has been described as extreme domestic violence and captivity at the hands of her husband. The 30-year-old victim, Mangibai Tanwar, reportedly endured being chained to a pillar for nearly 24 hours and sustaining injuries, including burns, from an iron rod. On the night of June 10, her husband’s violent behaviour allegedly began after he returned home intoxicated.

The situation escalated after a dinner where her husband, Sardar Singh Tanwar, allegedly took a tree branch and used it to beat her when she protested against his abusive behaviour. Mangibai attempted to leave the home to seek help at a nearby police station but was intercepted before she could reach her destination, leading to further violence and punishment at home.

Upon being forcibly returned to their home, she claimed that her husband wrapped a heavy iron chain around her neck and secured it to a pillar, allegedly stating, “Now let’s see how you go to the police station and file a complaint against me.” This marked the beginning of a horrifying ordeal, which intensified as he proceeded to burn her with a heated iron rod.

Details of the Assault

According to Mangibai’s account, the alleged branding with the heated rod resulted in severe burns on her waist, hip, and thigh. Despite her screams of pain, no one came to her aid. For the following day, she was reportedly kept isolated and prevented from contacting anyone outside the house. During this time, her husband was allegedly attempting to rally villagers to coerce her into withdrawing her plans to report him to the authorities.

Understanding the danger she was in, Mangibai feigned compliance, waiting for a moment when she could escape. Her opportunity arose when Sardar Singh reportedly left the house to hold a meeting with the villagers, leaving her alone.

In a desperate bid for freedom, she noticed a stone nearby and began striking the lock that secured the chain. After several attempts, she managed to break free. With the chain still dangling from her neck, she fled her home and made her way towards the Khilchipur police station.

Journey to Safety and Police Response

As she made her way through fields and isolated paths during the night, Mangibai faced numerous obstacles, including thorns that left her feet injured. Although some people saw her with the chain and assumed she was unwell, only one passer-by offered assistance. Ignoring the pain, she continued her trek to the police station, determined to seek help.

Upon arriving at the Khilchipur police station around 10 pm, even seasoned officers were taken aback by her condition. The iron chain remained locked on her neck, and she had visible burn marks. After recounting her traumatic experience to the police, they removed the chain and arranged for her to undergo a medical examination, which corroborated her claims of abuse and injury.

Following her report, law enforcement acted quickly, sending a team to her village. Sardar Singh was arrested shortly after, based on her allegations of assault and confinement. The Station House Officer has confirmed that a case has been officially registered against the accused, and investigations are ongoing to fully understand the circumstances that led to this incident.
