Why Nepal Should Be Your Next Trip: Six Iconic Places to Visit

The CSR Journal Magazine

Indians planning to travel this November can consider Nepal — a land where mountains breathe, rivers sing, and every corner echo ancient stories. For Indian travellers, Nepal feels familiar yet wonderfully new. It’s an easy escape and budget-friendly too. Here are six mesmerizing destinations one must visit in Nepal:

1. Start from Kathmandu Valley

A trip to Nepal mostly begins in the capital, Kathmandu, roughly 25 km wide. Here, one can visit Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, Swayambhunath Stupa, and Changu Narayan. It is a misconception that Kathmandu is at a very high altitude like 4,600 ft; you won’t feel any altitude issues here, and the weather is pleasant.

2. Himalaya’s Sunrise Balcony: Nagarkot

Just 23 kilometres from Kathmandu, travellers visit this place in Bhaktapur district to witness stunning sunrises. The view here is mesmerizing and picturesque. The scenic sunrise and sunset make Nagarkot one of the most popular destinations. The Mahankal Temple here is famous among tantric practitioners. Apart from Mahankal Temple, the Kali Devi Temple is also very well-known — this is the historically notable site of the Nagarkot massacre.

3. Solukhumbu District

If the weather is clear, one can see Sagarmatha (Mt Everest). If not, then head towards the Solukhumbu District, located northeast of Kathmandu, to witness the world’s highest mountain. There is no motorable road to Everest, so travellers embark on the Everest Base Camp trek. In Solukhumbu, one can also visit the Sagarmatha National Park.

4. The Serene Lake City: Pokhara

Almost 203 kilometres from Kathmandu, Pokhara is a must-visit destination. Situated beside Phewa Lake and surrounded by Annapurna peaks, the place is breathtaking. If you are planning a trek in the Annapurna region, Pokhara will be on the way. Here, one can enjoy paddling a rowboat on the lake, water rafting, paragliding, a peaceful visit to the Shanti Stupa (World Peace Pagoda), and of course, a cable car ride offering sweeping mountain views.

5. Lumbini

After Pokhara, one can head straight to Lumbini, located 138 kilometres away. Travellers interested in Buddhism make it a point to visit this sacred spot. Lumbini, the birthplace of Prince Siddhartha Gautam (Lord Buddha), is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Maya Devi Temple — believed to be the exact place where Buddha was born — is the centre of attraction. You will also see many temples and monasteries here.

6. Mustang: Nepal’s Forbidden Kingdom

Situated on the northern side of the Annapurna Range and approximately 220 kilometres from Pokhara, Mustang is known for its barren yet breathtaking landscape. The region is mostly inhabited by ethnically Tibetan people. Mustang is divided into two parts — Lower and Upper Mustang. Lower Mustang is easily accessible. Here, you will find Kagbeni, a beautiful village on the Kali Gandaki River, apple-growing settlements, and the revered Muktinath Temple.
