WhatsApp Develops New Guest Chats Feature for Non-Users

The CSR Journal Magazine

WhatsApp is in the process of introducing a feature known as Guest Chats, designed to enable users to communicate with individuals who do not possess a WhatsApp account. This functionality aims to simplify interactions by utilizing a secure chat link, allowing direct communication without requiring the download of the messaging application.

Functionality of Guest Chats

A WhatsApp user can create a link through the “Invite a Friend” section. This link can be disseminated via SMS, email, or other messaging platforms. When a recipient accesses the link through either a mobile or desktop browser, they are presented with the choice to download WhatsApp or to proceed as a guest. Before initiating the chat, the guest must input a name, which can serve as a pseudonym, aiding in identification for the other participant.

The report indicates that guest chats utilize end-to-end encryption, ensuring that the contents of the conversation remain inaccessible to WhatsApp. To continue as a guest, the user must agree to WhatsApp’s Terms of Service. Following this, the guest will have visibility of the phone number of the individual who sent the chat invitation. However, guest accounts will not undergo verification by WhatsApp, raising potential security concerns regarding the identity of guest users.

Security Considerations

As WhatsApp cannot validate the identity of individuals using guest accounts, there exists a risk that an unintentional recipient could gain access to a conversation, potentially through a compromised email account or if the guest’s phone number has changed. During the chat, the label “Guest” will appear prominently at the top of the app interface, allowing WhatsApp users to recognize that they are interacting with someone without a registered account.

Limitations of Guest Chats

Guest Chats are intended for temporary communication and come with certain constraints. Users participating as guests will be unable to access group chats or use various media-sharing functionalities, including sending stickers or voice messages. Additionally, common features such as sharing photos, videos, documents, and GIFs will not be available to guest users. Voice and video calls are also excluded from this feature. Ultimately, guests will be limited to exchanging only text-based messages, making this feature less versatile than a full WhatsApp account.
