West Bengal Assembly Election 2026: Poll Worker Assaulted After Protesting Model Code Violation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tensions flared in Nadia during a training session for the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections when a poll worker was reportedly physically assaulted for flagging a violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The confrontation took place at the Ranaghat Debnath Boys Institute, where election officials and teachers were undergoing mandatory training.

Saikat Chattopadhyay, a teacher assigned to election duty, alleged that the session began with promotional advertisements featuring Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee being displayed on the screen. Chattopadhyay and several colleagues raised objections, arguing that displaying government advertisements during the election period is a direct violation of the Election Commission’s guidelines.

Allegations of Violence and Intimidation

According to the victim, the protest was met with immediate hostility from officials connected to the Block Development Office (BDO). The situation escalated quickly:

Physical Assault : Chattopadhyay claims he was suddenly surrounded and “brutally beaten” by individuals associated with the BDO office.

Threats of Legal Action: He further alleged that he was threatened with being framed in “false criminal cases” for speaking up.

BDO’s Involvement: The victim explicitly accused the BDO of leading the intimidation tactics.

“I was assaulted by administration officials. BDO office staff threw me down and beat me. Under the BDO’s direction, they threatened to trap me in false cases simply because we protested against showing the CM’s ads on the white screen before training,” Chattopadhyay stated.

Official Response and Political Fallout

The authorities have offered a different version of events. Sayantan Basu, the BDO of Hanskhali, denied the allegations of a physical assault, characterizing the incident as a “verbal altercation.” He claimed that staff members attempted to reason with the poll worker, but the argument reignited later during the session.

The incident has sparked significant unrest and political debate:

Protests: Fellow poll workers staged a demonstration outside the training center, questioning how “outsiders” could enter a secured facility to attack an election official.

Political Reaction : BJP MP Jagannath Sarkar slammed the ruling party, alleging that administrative officials like OCs and BDOs are acting as “agents of the TMC.” He described the incident as further proof of a climate of “terror” created by the state government.

Police eventually intervened to bring the situation under control, but the atmosphere remains tense as the state moves closer to the 2026 polls.
