Zubeen Garg’s murder investigation has intensified. After the arrest of Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, two more arrests have happened. One is Zubeen’s bandmate Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and another is co-singer Amritprabha Mahanta. Both the accused were in Singapore when Garg died. These arrests raise the question, if Zubeen’s death was just an accident. As per police, some new evidence has led to their arrest. With these two fresh arrests, the number has come up to four.
On what charges have they been booked?
They have been arrested on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal conspiracy, and causing death by negligence. It has been confirmed by Special DGP (CID) Munna Prasad Gupta that both Sharma and Mahanta are in police custody for 14 days. The DGP confirmed that new sections have been added, including Section 103 of the BNS — this is related to murder.
As per a report from a source in the Special Investigation Team (SIT), Goswami is arrested because in a video he was seen swimming close to Zubeen Garg, and Mahanta was recording the video on her mobile.
Political turn in Zubeen’s case
Zubeen’s death case has turned political owing to Mahanta’s influential family ties. Mahanta is the brother of Jyoti Mahanta, ex-Assam DGP and current Chief Information Commissioner, and another brother, Nani Gopal Mahanta, is the current VC of Gauhati University and former Education Advisor to the Chief Minister. Owing to the sensitivity of the case, the CID has intensified the probe. To date, 60 FIRs have been filed across Assam after Zubeen’s sudden death on September 19 in Singapore.
