Vietnam’s Prime Minister Le Minh Hun has mandated immediate action following the tragic capsizing of a tourist boat near Phu Quoc Island, which resulted in the deaths of fifteen Indian tourists. On July 11, 2026, he issued an urgent directive aimed at coordinating both central and local authorities to prioritise search and rescue efforts. This directive emphasises the necessity to provide medical assistance to survivors and support to the families of the deceased.

In a statement released via the Consulate General of Vietnam in Mumbai, authorities expressed profound condolences for the loss suffered by the Indian nationals. The statement reflected solidarity with the victim’s families, wishing them strength in this time of grief.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister’s directive includes the mobilisation of essential medical resources to aid the injured and efforts to prevent any further tragedy. Authorities are tasked with providing comprehensive assistance to those affected by this unfortunate incident.

Investigative Measures and Accountability

The Prime Minister has called for a thorough investigation into the causes surrounding the accident. He stressed the importance of identifying any regulatory violations that may have led to the capsizing. The directive insisted on a meticulous evaluation, aiming to uncover both direct and indirect factors contributing to the incident.

The Prime Minister’s statement includes a clear warning that any individual or organisation found in breach of regulations will face strict legal action. The necessity for accountability underscores the Vietnamese government’s commitment to ensuring safety for all tourists.

Additionally, the Prime Minister has emphasised the importance of implementing corrective measures to help prevent a recurrence of such tragic events in the future. This proactive approach aims to enhance safety standards for tourists in Vietnam.

Coordination with Indian Authorities

Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to maintain close communication with the Indian Embassy in Vietnam. This collaboration aims to provide necessary consular assistance to the affected families and ensure the protection of Indian citizens during this crisis.

The Consulate has reassured the Indian community and the families affected that the Vietnamese government is fully committed to delivering support and resources in the wake of this tragedy. Special measures are being implemented to address the needs of those impacted.

Prior to the accident, the boat had a total of thirty-six individuals on board, with thirty-two being Indian tourists. The incident occurred near Hon May Rut Ngoai Island as the boat capsized. The Indian Embassy later confirmed that all deceased individuals were Indian nationals, amplifying the community’s sorrow over the loss.

The Vietnamese authorities have reiterated their commitment to upholding the highest safety standards for international visitors. Throughout this challenging period, they remain dedicated to supporting the families of the Indian tourists and ensuring similar incidents do not occur in the future.
