During his recent visit to Uzbekistan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was emotionally touched when Uzbek students recited his poems in Hindi and Uzbek. This unexpected cultural display occurred during his interaction with students and academics at Tashkent State University of Oriental Studies. PM Modi reflected on how the recitation reminded him of the feelings he initially experienced while composing those verses long ago.

The Prime Minister remarked on the significance of hearing his poems rendered in a language that was not native to the students. He commented on their ability to express the emotions he originally intended, stating that it highlighted the depth of their understanding and immersion in Hindi. “This only becomes possible when you live that language,” he added, emphasising the students’ commitment to their learning.

Recitations Showcase Creativity and Cultural Ties

The poetry performance included three of PM Modi’s original works, each recited in both languages. Fourth-year student Keldiyorov Dilhushbek initiated the recitation with ‘Abhi Toh Suraj Uga Hai’ in Hindi, followed by its Uzbek translation by third-year student Dilshoda Juraboeva. The dynamic exchange highlighted a bridge between cultures, as students celebrated poems by an Indian leader in a foreign classroom.

Additional recitations included ‘Naye Bharat Ke Naye Sankalp,’ presented by Otabek Amirov in Hindi and Ikromkhuja Sa’dillaev in Uzbek, along with ‘Manavta Ko Kahin Na Lag Jaye Daag,’ recited by Orzu Kuldosheva and Fayoza Abdurasulova. These performances garnered significant enthusiasm from the audience and marked a memorable highlight during PM Modi’s two-day visit.

The event underscored a long-standing cultural connection between Uzbekistan and India, particularly through the medium of language and art. The students’ interpretations of these poems reflect an ongoing dialogue between the two nations.

Recognition and Diplomatic Engagement

During this visit, Prime Minister Modi was awarded Uzbekistan’s highest state honour, the Order of ‘Oliy Darajali Dustlik.’ This accolade signifies the strong bilateral ties between India and Uzbekistan, reinforcing their commitment to mutual respect and cooperation.

An informal dinner hosted by Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev at Kuksaroy Palace featured a special musical rendition inspired by PM Modi’s poem ‘Abhi Toh Suraj Uga Hai.’ This integration of art and diplomacy illustrated the collaborative spirit of the two nations in cultural domains.

PM Modi’s visit and the students’ poetry recital not only highlighted the importance of cultural exchange but also showcased the enduring appeal of Indian literature beyond its borders.
