The Uttar Pradesh government has announced that testing for Influenza-A (H1N1) will be provided at no cost in all government healthcare facilities across the state. This directive came from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath during a review meeting concerning the ongoing situation of Influenza-A and seasonal influenza. As of Wednesday, 685 laboratory-confirmed cases of H1N1 were reported in Uttar Pradesh, prompting the government to take immediate action.

In addition to free testing, Adityanath has instructed that private healthcare institutions must adhere to prescribed fee limits for H1N1 testing. Hospitals are required to maintain sufficient stocks of essential medicines and establish testing and isolation facilities. Furthermore, they are to prepare separate intensive care unit (ICU) wards dedicated to patients with severe symptoms.

The Chief Minister emphasised the necessity for better surveillance and treatment protocols in districts with high case numbers. He mandated the use of auxiliary health personnel, such as Aanganwadi and ASHA workers, to assist in identifying suspected cases through intensified screening measures.

Guidelines for Prevention and Treatment Issued

During the meeting, the need for detailed guidelines on H1N1 prevention and treatment was highlighted. Adityanath instructed the healthcare system to provide efficient teleconsultation services. He urged hospitals to ensure that patients experiencing mild symptoms are advised to rest at home and self-isolate according to medical guidelines. Immediate intervention is required for individuals with severe symptoms, while vulnerable populations, including children, pregnant women, elderly individuals, and those with significant pre-existing conditions, will receive additional attention.

Hospital procedures have also been modified to improve care for patients showing influenza-like symptoms. Separate counters are to be established to manage these patients effectively, ensuring that serious cases receive timely medical attention to avoid overwhelming healthcare facilities.

The Chief Minister noted specific symptoms that may indicate severe illness, such as difficulty breathing, chest pain, extreme drowsiness, and bluish nails. For children, high fever, inability to eat, seizures, and rapid or difficult breathing were identified as critical warning signs that necessitate prompt medical evaluation.

Available Resources and Public Awareness Initiatives

The Uttar Pradesh government has assured adequate availability of oseltamivir capsules, syrups, and the H1N1 vaccine. District hospitals have been equipped with flu help desks, sample collection facilities, and dedicated outpatient departments for flu cases. Medical colleges are prepared with testing facilities, required medicines, and isolation beds along with sufficient RT-PCR kits.

Adityanath has also called for heightened public awareness regarding H1N1, instructing healthcare officials to disseminate simple and precise information about safety measures. He stressed the importance of avoiding unnecessary panic, while promoting hygiene practices, cough etiquette, and other infection prevention methods, especially in crowded settings and healthcare institutions.

The state’s actions are focused on maintaining free testing in public facilities, regulating costs in private healthcare, fortifying surveillance in affected areas, and implementing clear treatment and referral pathways as cases continue to rise in Uttar Pradesh. Influenza-A (H1N1) is primarily transmitted through respiratory droplets released when an individual coughs or sneezes, with common symptoms including fever, sore throat, body aches, and red eyes.
