UP Defence Industrial Corridor Gains Momentum, Promises ₹35,000 Crore Investment and 52,000 Jobs

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC), a flagship initiative of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is steadily transforming into a major pillar of India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem. Designed to strengthen indigenous defence production and boost aerospace capabilities, the corridor has already made significant progress in land allocation, investments, and job creation across the state.

Land Allotment Accelerates Across Six Strategic Nodes

So far, over 977.54 hectares of land have been allotted to 62 companies, paving the way for investments worth ₹11,997.45 crore and generating 14,256 direct jobs. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has approved 2,097 hectares across six nodes, Aligarh, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi, Chitrakoot, and Agra. Of this, more than 2,040 hectares have already been acquired, with 1,598.92 hectares currently available for industrial allotment.

Aligarh and Kanpur Lead Development Push

Among the nodes, Aligarh has emerged as the frontrunner in terms of the number of companies, with 24 firms receiving land allotments. Kanpur, meanwhile, leads in land area, with 210 hectares allocated to five companies. Jhansi has allotted 571 hectares to 17 companies, while Lucknow has provided over 131 hectares to 16 firms. Preparations are underway to begin land allotment in Chitrakoot, Aligarh Phase-2, and Agra, further accelerating the corridor’s expansion.

MoUs Signal Massive Investment Pipeline

Under the close supervision of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Defence Corridor has seen the signing of 197 Memorandums of Understanding, including 172 industrial MoUs. These agreements represent a proposed investment of ₹34,844.49 crore and the potential creation of 52,658 jobs. Additionally, over 110 new MoUs are in the pipeline, which could attract nearly ₹22,847 crore in investments and generate around 38,000 more jobs in the coming phase.

Aligned with Make in India and ODOP Vision

UPEIDA Additional Chief Executive Officer H.P. Shahi highlighted that the Defence Corridor has been strategically aligned with national initiatives such as “Make in India” and Uttar Pradesh’s “One District, One Product (ODOP)” scheme. This integration is aimed at strengthening local supply chains, promoting MSMEs, and ensuring inclusive industrial growth across regions.

BrahMos Unit Boosts Strategic Importance

A major milestone for the corridor has already been achieved with the establishment of the BrahMos missile manufacturing unit in Lucknow, significantly enhancing the project’s strategic and national security relevance. This development has positioned Uttar Pradesh as a serious contender alongside states like Gujarat and Tamil Nadu in the defence manufacturing space.

Towards a Trillion-Dollar Economy

With rapid progress on infrastructure, land allocation, and industry participation, the UP Defence Industrial Corridor is emerging as a cornerstone of the state’s ambition to become a trillion-dollar economy. More major defence and aerospace announcements are expected in the coming months, reinforcing Uttar Pradesh’s growing stature as a global defence manufacturing hub.
