Tesla Reports $1.53 Billion in Free Cash Flow Amid One-Fifth Cut to 2026 Spending Forecast

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tesla has announced an unexpected free cash flow of $1.53 billion for the third quarter, surpassing Wall Street’s projections. This positive outcome is attributed to the company’s lower-than-expected capital expenditure, which amounted to $4.7 billion during the quarter. This figure is double the spending from the same period last year but significantly less than the anticipated $7.5 billion, according to LSEG data.

The reduction in capital expenditure has led to speculation regarding Tesla’s future investments, particularly in artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous driving technologies. The company has revised its capital expenditure forecast for 2026 to approximately $20 billion, down from over $25 billion. However, specific areas where spending will be curtailed have not been disclosed.

Following the announcement, Tesla’s shares initially rose by 2% in after-hours trading, buoyed by the positive cash flow and higher gross margins. However, the stock later reversed course, trading 2% lower. Year-to-date, shares have experienced a decline of around 14%.

Concerns Over Future Investment Plans

Industry analysts have expressed concerns regarding Tesla’s reduced capital expenditure. Ryan Lee, senior vice president of product and strategy at Direxion, noted that while the free cash flow was a pleasant surprise, it raises questions about the company’s commitment to its ambitious goals in AI and robotics. He suggested that the lower spending might indicate a less aggressive approach to competing in the AI sector.

The financial results come at a time when CEO Elon Musk is reportedly exploring a potential merger between Tesla and SpaceX. This unexpected cash generation could bolster Tesla’s financial standing ahead of any such deal. However, reduced investment in key areas could lead to doubts about the company’s capacity to fulfil its growth ambitions.

During a conference call with analysts, Musk referred to the merger as a “good idea” but did not provide further details. A merger would unite two companies central to Musk’s vision of a comprehensive technology and manufacturing enterprise encompassing various sectors, including AI, energy, and transportation.

Mixed Financial Performance and Growing Demand

Tesla’s financial performance presents a mixed picture, with revenue remaining flat compared to the previous year despite the cessation of US tax credits that had previously supported sales. Nevertheless, the revenue figure exceeded Wall Street’s expectations, although net income fell by 43% during the quarter. The company reported its largest backlog of passenger vehicles in four years.

Increased petrol prices have reportedly enhanced demand for electric vehicles, particularly in Europe. Tesla delivered 486,532 vehicles in the third quarter, positioning itself to increase annual deliveries for the first time in three years. Musk indicated that demand is significantly outpacing production, suggesting a positive outlook for the company.

Additionally, Tesla has reported improved adoption rates for its driver-assistance technology in North America. The attach rate for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature exceeded three-quarters of new vehicle deliveries, marking a notable increase from the previous quarter. Automotive gross margin, excluding regulatory credits, reached 18.1%, surpassing analysts’ estimates.

Despite facing competitive pressures from new, often cheaper models introduced by rivals, Tesla remains focused on its goal of producing five million vehicles annually by around 2030, compared to an expected 2.5 million this year. The company continues to rely heavily on its established Model 3 and Model Y vehicles as it navigates the evolving market landscape.
