Unrest Erupts in Basra Following Deadly Rocket Attack and Storming of Kuwaiti Consulate

The CSR Journal Magazine

Tensions escalated in southern Iraq as protesters stormed the Kuwaiti consulate in Basra on February 1, 2025. This unrest followed a deadly rocket attack in the nearby area of Khor al-Zubair, reportedly resulting in the deaths of at least three individuals. The local police and health officials indicated that rockets launched from the direction of Kuwait struck a residential building, injuring five others. As rescue operations continued, teams worked to locate family members believed to be trapped under the rubble.

Authorities issued warnings about the potential for an increase in the death toll as debris removal efforts progressed. This violent incident provoked significant outrage in Basra, where demonstrators gathered outside the Kuwaiti diplomatic mission and ultimately breached the consulate premises, raising serious concerns regarding the security of foreign diplomatic missions operating within Iraq.

Kuwait’s Response to the Attack

Kuwait’s government strongly condemned the assailants who stormed its diplomatic mission, labelling the incident as a “serious breach of diplomatic norms.” The Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry stated that Iraq carries the responsibility to ensure the safety of diplomatic and consular missions located on its territory. The ministry also reiterated Kuwait’s stance of neutrality within regional conflicts and its intention to prevent its territory from being utilised for launching attacks against any nation.

Amid the rising tensions, the international community has become increasingly concerned about the implications of this unrest. Observers noted that the attack on the consulate underscores the fragile security situation in Iraq, particularly as citizens express their frustrations with the ongoing violence.

In a broader context, the incident has highlighted rising emotions and tensions between the two countries, particularly with the backdrop of the already unstable geopolitical landscape in the region.

Further Escalation in the Region

As the situation deteriorated, reports emerged of Iraqi air defences intercepting three drones over Baghdad. These drones reportedly fell into the Tigris River without causing any casualties. In a separate incident, rockets targeted multiple locations in Baghdad, resulting in injuries to two individuals after one projectile struck the al-Amal al-Shaabi district in al-Amiriyah.

Additionally, it was reported that two rockets struck the US military installation, Camp Victory, located near Baghdad International Airport, leading to fires within the base. Security personnel confirmed these attacks, contributing to the heightened sense of insecurity in the city.

In anticipation of potential retaliatory actions and concerns regarding further violence, Kuwait’s Interior Ministry implemented a stay-at-home advisory for its citizens from midnight on February 7 until 6 a.m. on February 8. This precautionary measure urged residents to remain indoors unless faced with emergencies. The advisory reflects an intensified effort by authorities to enhance emergency response systems amidst escalating tensions.

The series of violent incidents and diplomatic tensions highlight a concerning trend of rising cross-border tensions in the Gulf region, prompting both Iraq and Kuwait to remain on heightened alert against the possibility of a broader regional confrontation.
