Two Jewish Men Stabbed in London as Police Classify Incident as Terrorism

The CSR Journal Magazine

Two Jewish men were attacked and injured on a street in London on Wednesday, prompting police to label the incident as an act of terrorism. A 45-year-old man was apprehended under suspicion of attempted murder following the stabbings, which occurred in the Golders Green area. Authorities reported that the victims, aged thirty-four and seventy-six, were taken to a hospital with knife injuries.

Counterterrorism units are currently examining potential links between this incident and recent arson attacks targeting Jewish establishments in London. The Metropolitan Police efforts are focused on determining a broader network of antisemitic violence in the region.

Political Reactions

In the aftermath of the stabbings, political figures across the spectrum expressed their condemnation. Prime Minister Keir Starmer asserted that “attacks on our Jewish community are attacks on Britain,” adding that he convened a meeting of the government’s emergency committee to devise an appropriate response. He underscored the severity of the situation facing Jewish communities in the country.

Metropolitan Police chief Mark Rowley characterised the attack as “another horrendous act of violence directed against our Jewish communities.” However, his presence at the scene was met with discontent from some members of the Jewish community, who voiced their frustration at perceived failures in safeguarding them. Notably, shouts of “shame on you” were directed at him during his media briefing.

Describing the events, the security organisation Shomrim reported that the suspect had been seen running along Golders Green Road with a knife, allegedly attempting to assault Jewish individuals. The organisation noted that their members helped to detain him before police took control of the situation.

Details of the Attack

Surveillance footage showed a man wearing a kippah, or traditional skullcap, at a bus stop prior to the attack. Police indicated that the suspect also made an effort to stab officers present at the scene, although no officers were harmed. Rowley revealed that the assailant, whose name has not been disclosed, possesses a background marked by serious violence and mental health challenges.

Recent weeks have seen a rise in arson incidents targeting Jewish sites in London, with multiple arrests made, covering individuals from teenage years to their forties. Counterterrorism officials are particularly investigating whether these attacks can be linked to Iranian proxies, as the UK has previously accused Iran of utilising criminal entities to carry out operations against both Iranian opposition and the Jewish community.

The Community Security Trust reported a significant increase in antisemitic incidents across the UK, with numbers soaring since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. These latest statistics reveal that the count of reported incidents has jumped from 1,662 in 2022 to approximately 3,700 in 2025.

Broader Community Response

In light of these events, Britain’s chief rabbi Ephraim Mirvis expressed that the Jewish community is faced with an escalating threat of violence and intimidation, highlighting the inadequacy of mere condemnations. He urged all institutions, communities, and leaders to take meaningful action against antisemitism, reinforcing the notion that this type of hate must be confronted collectively.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog has echoed these sentiments, advocating for international awareness concerning increasing anti-Jewish sentiment. He remarked that it has become perilous for Jews to walk openly in major cities, emphasising that this unacceptable reality must be addressed.

The Golders Green area, which has a sizable Jewish population, remains an epicentre for kosher establishments and community centres, underlining the significant social dynamics between Jewish and wider communities in London.
