TMC’s Saayoni Ghosh Reacts to Kolkata Flat Controversy Involving Abhishek Banerjee

The CSR Journal Magazine

Saayoni Ghosh, a Member of Parliament from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has provided clarity regarding a flat in Kolkata that recently attracted political controversy linked to her and senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee. On Thursday, she shared details of an inspection conducted by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, which reportedly confirmed that the flat at 19B, 7 Tanks Lane does not belong to either politician.

According to Ghosh’s post on X, municipal officials discovered that the property is owned by a couple named Abhishek Bandhopadhaya and Sayani Ghosh. The names of this couple are similar to those of the two TMC leaders, which led to confusion and subsequent speculation online, she explained.

Following the inspection findings, Ghosh stated that the couple cooperated fully with civic officials and had provided the necessary ownership documentation to validate their claim. Ghosh expressed gratitude for their cooperation, while noting that the couple was dismayed by the unwarranted scrutiny prompted by their name similarities.

Political Tensions Escalate Amid Allegations

The controversy surrounding the flat emerged amid ongoing tensions between the TMC and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which have engaged in a political fracas regarding alleged irregularities in property ownership and construction in Kolkata. Accusations from BJP leaders against multiple TMC officials have intensified, with Abhishek Banerjee’s name being mentioned in these attacks.

Prior to Ghosh’s clarification, she had publicly dismissed claims of co-ownership of the flat with Banerjee, labelling the allegations as “fake news.” In her posts, she urged individuals to refer to her election affidavit for verification and indicated the possibility of pursuing legal action against those disseminating inaccurate information.

Ghosh maintained a firm stance against the attacks, asserting her commitment to counter any defamatory claims. She refuted the suggestions that she had benefited from political influence, focusing instead on her humble beginnings.

Ghosh Faces Open Death Threats Amidst Political Climate

In addition to the flat controversy, Saayoni Ghosh is also dealing with a separate issue involving a reported death threat made by a BJP leader from Uttar Pradesh. On the same day as her announcement regarding the flat, Ghosh revealed that a video had surfaced in which a BJP leader allegedly offered a reward of Rs 1 crore for her assassination. She described this as an “open death threat” and expressed shock at the violent rhetoric directed at her as a sitting MP.

The threat in question was allegedly made by a local BJP official in Bulkandshahr. Ghosh publicly condemned the statement, questioning whether such remarks align with the party’s professed commitment to women’s empowerment as expressed in their “Nari Shakti Vandan” slogan.

Ghosh has tagged senior BJP officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, in her social media posts, urging them to condemn the threats against her. The combination of these controversies illustrates the escalating tensions within Indian politics, particularly between opposing parties.
