Three People Killed Following Car Set Ablaze in Sand Mining Dispute

The CSR Journal Magazine

Three individuals tragically lost their lives and several others were injured during a violent altercation connected to a prolonged sand mining dispute in Koriya district, Chhattisgarh. The incident allegedly occurred when a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) transporting the victims was stopped and subsequently set on fire by the alleged assailants, leading to their deaths. Additionally, three other individuals suffered serious burns as a result of the incident.

Details of the Encounter

The clash unfolded late on the night of June 17, 2026, in the Sonhat area, involving rival factions known for their ongoing conflicts over local mining rights. Multiple arrests have been made, and the police have launched an extensive investigation to ascertain the underlying causes of the violence. The deceased were identified as Bharat Singh, also known as Lalla Singh, who had affiliations with the BJP, along with his companions, Virendra Pratap Singh and Nagendra Singh.

Authorities reported that two other injured individuals are presently receiving medical treatment for their injuries. Initial findings suggest that tensions had escalated over a substantial period between two groups allegedly spearheaded by Bharat Singh and another faction associated with the Tripathi family. Previously reported disputes and complaints regarding mining operations had heightened the animosity between the two parties.

According to law enforcement, the violent encounter emerged after members of one faction ventured to meet the rival group following a phone call. During the confrontation, the victims were in two vehicles: a Toyota Fortuner SUV and a sedan. Investigators revealed that the SUV was reportedly blocked, hit multiple times by a light tipper truck, and ultimately set aflame.

Casualties and Victims

Reports state that the collision with the truck damaged the vehicle, rendering the doors jammed and preventing escape for those inside. Bharat Singh died at the scene due to being trapped within the burning SUV. Nagendra Singh suffered extensive burn injuries and later died while being transported for treatment to Raipur. Similarly, Virendra Pratap Singh, who incurred critical injuries during the altercation, succumbed while receiving medical care at a hospital in Ambikapur.

The occupants of the second vehicle also faced attacks, resulting in further severe injuries among additional victims. Initial medical attention was provided at the district hospital in Baikunthpur before they were referred for more advanced treatment. Some eyewitness accounts allege that fuel was poured on the SUV prior to igniting; however, police have not verified these claims, stating that a forensic analysis is currently underway to determine the cause of the fire and whether it was deliberately initiated or a consequence of the vehicular collision.

Deepak Jha, Inspector General of the Surguja Range, visited the scene to oversee the investigation alongside local officials. Additional Superintendent of Police Suresha Choubey provided information that the confrontation, which occurred around 9:30 pm, involved two factions: the Tripathi group and the Thakur group. The investigation continues to focus on understanding the precise cause of the fire.

Legal and Political Implications

The police have initiated legal proceedings under various sections relating to murder, attempted murder, arson, and vandalism. Reports indicate that seven to nine individuals are named in the FIR. Four suspects—identified as Akshat Tripathi, Vishal Tripathi, Satyaprakash Tripathi, and Mannu Tripathi—have been taken into custody while efforts continue to apprehend any remaining suspects.

This incident has sparked political reactions and heightened concerns regarding illegal mining practices and local rivalries in the Chhattisgarh region. Authorities have pledged to take firm action and emphasised that the ongoing investigation will clarify the sequence of events, ensuring accountability for those involved in this tragic incident.
