A tragic road incident in Palghar, Maharashtra, claimed the lives of thirteen people and left several others injured. The accident took place on Monday, May 18, at around 4:00 PM on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway, specifically in Dhaniwari village. Initial reports indicate that a tempo, carrying approximately thirty to forty passengers who were en route to an engagement ceremony, was driving on the wrong side of the highway. A trailer travelling in the opposite direction reportedly lost control, leading to a severe collision.

The container section of the trailer collided forcefully with the left side of the tempo. Additionally, a motorcycle was also involved in the incident. Local authorities have confirmed that thirteen fatalities resulted from this crash. Emergency services were promptly deployed to the scene to assist those who survived.

Palghar Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh provided further details, stating, “A tempo carrying thirty to forty people was driving incorrectly on the Gujarat-Mumbai road. A container coming from the opposite direction collided, resulting in the death of thirteen individuals and injuring sixteen others.” He noted that the police responded quickly and made efforts to restore normal traffic flow.

Medical Response and Ongoing Investigation

The injured victims have been transported to Vedantaa Hospital in Dahanu for critical medical attention, while others have been taken to Kasa Sub-District Hospital for ongoing treatment. The Palghar District Administration has initiated an investigation to determine the precise circumstances that led to the collision.

In the wake of the accident, it was confirmed that approximately twenty people suffered injuries, and they received medical care in local hospitals, including the facility at Dhundalwadi. The efforts of the local administration and emergency teams have been widely acknowledged for their rapid response. The rescue operations were concluded swiftly, allowing for efficient medical assistance to those affected.

Authorities continue to gather information and evidence as part of the investigation process to prevent future incidents of this nature on the busy highway.

Condolences from Officials

The tragic loss of life has elicited responses from several political leaders. President Droupadi Murmu expressed her sorrow regarding the incident, stating, “The news of the loss of lives in the road accident that occurred in Palghar is extremely heartbreaking. I extend my deepest condolences to the families affected and pray for the swift recovery of the injured.” This sentiment has resonated through various political circles.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also conveyed his condolences, calling the accident “extremely heartbreaking,” and reassured the public that the local administration is providing high-quality medical care to the injured. He expressed his prayers for the rapid recovery of those hospitalised.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis conveyed his grief over the incident, detailing that he is in regular contact with local authorities. He announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased, emphasising the state government’s commitment to addressing the tragic consequences of the accident. He noted his sorrow upon learning about the fatalities and assured that necessary support would be provided to those impacted.
