‘The Taj Story’ Sparks Controversy Over Movie Poster Depicting Lord Shiva

The CSR Journal Magazine

The announcement of The Taj Story, an upcoming film featuring veteran actor Paresh Rawal, has drawn heavy backlash online after its motion poster showcased a depiction of Lord Shiva rising from the dome of the iconic Taj Mahal. The visual, which was shared on social media this Monday, triggered a wave of criticism from netizens and reignited debates over unverified historical theories surrounding the monument.

Despite Rawal’s stellar reputation as one of Indian cinema’s finest actors known for acclaimed performances in films like Firaaq, Oh My God, and Mumbai Meri Jaan this new project has become the center of controversy even before its release. Though the actor has long been celebrated for his versatility across comedy and drama, his association with The Taj Story has left many fans expressing disappointment.

The central point of contention lies in the poster’s imagery, which seemingly aligns with a long-debated but historically unsupported theory that the Taj Mahal was built atop a Hindu temple, possibly dedicated to Lord Shiva. Though this claim has been repeatedly dismissed by mainstream historians, it remains a part of fringe discourse in India.

Paresh Rawal Deletes Controversial Post

As criticism escalated, Paresh Rawal took down the original post and shared a public statement quoting the film’s production team. The statement sought to clarify the film’s intent and dismiss any religious motive behind the poster.

“The makers of the film The Taj Story clarify that the movie does not deal with any religious matters, nor does it claim that a Shiv temple resides within the Taj Mahal. It focuses solely on historical facts. We would kindly request you to watch the film and form your own opinion,” read the official note issued by Swarnim Global Services Pvt. Ltd.

Several users on X (formerly Twitter) expressed outrage over the poster. One wrote, “This is a joke. A country claiming to be the fourth-largest economy is indulging in such ridiculous propaganda that even propaganda itself would be embarrassed.” Another commented, “This film will ruin everything you’ve built over the years. I loved you in Hera Pheri, but now you’ve joined the propaganda club. First Akshay Kumar, now you.” Others ridiculed the film’s concept, calling it “langoor-level crap” and accusing its creators of damaging India’s global image.

‘The Taj Story’ Set for Oct 31 Release

Produced by Swarnim Global Services Pvt. Ltd. and CA Suresh Jha, and helmed by Tushar Amrish Goel, The Taj Story is scheduled for release on October 31. Creative producer Vikas Radhesham is also associated with the project.

While the filmmakers insist that the movie is based on historical research and not religion, the depiction of divine imagery within a sensitive architectural and cultural context has provoked emotional reactions. The filmmakers have urged audiences to reserve judgment until the film is released and viewed in its entirety.

Paresh Rawal, who has recently appeared in major films like Sanju, URI: The Surgical Strike, and Tiger Zinda Hai, appears to be entering yet another phase of his diverse career. However, the reception to The Taj Story’s announcement has made it clear that historical and religious sensitivities remain a flashpoint in Indian cinema.
