Tamil Nadu Congress Chief Offers Resignation After Assembly Polls

The CSR Journal Magazine

The chief of the Congress party’s Tamil Nadu unit, Selvaperunthagai, announced on February 1, 2025, that he plans to resign from his position following the forthcoming assembly elections. This decision is influenced by his desire to focus more on the needs of the people in his constituency, Sriperumbudur, located in Kanchipuram district.

His resignation offer came shortly after he was confirmed as the Congress candidate for the April 23 assembly elections in his constituency. In a media interaction, he expressed his readiness to fully dedicate himself to serving the constituents and the broader Tamil Nadu region once the election results are released.

Selvaperunthagai conveyed his intentions to consult the party’s national leadership following the polls. He articulated confidence in his chances of winning and reaffirmed his commitment to prioritising the expectations and requirements of his constituents, asserting that he would not deviate from this promise.

Reasons Behind His Decision

Detailing the rationale behind his choice to resign, Selvaperunthagai stated that it is essential to leave a position with a sense of accomplishment. He mentioned his successful track record, particularly in the recent by-elections, where he claimed a significant victory, reinforcing the trust of his constituents.

He highlighted previous electoral achievements, notably a 100 per cent success rate during the by-elections conducted two years ago, asserting that this demonstrated his commitment to the party and the electorate. Additionally, he referenced an equally successful outcome in Puducherry, where the party reportedly secured wins in all nine constituencies contested. He expressed optimism about replicating this success in the upcoming elections.

Selvaperunthagai emphasised that he would resign with a sense of fulfilment, confident about his contributions during his tenure. He also stated that, while he would step down from the leadership position, he is open to accepting any other roles assigned by the party after the election results are known.

Congress’s Election Strategies

On the same day, the Congress party announced a list of 27 candidates for the upcoming assembly elections slated for April 23. According to this list, Selvaperunthagai will run from the Sriperumbudur (SC) constituency. Other candidates include S Rajesh Kumar, who will contest from Killiyoor, and former MP A Chella Kumar, contesting from Krishnagiri.

As part of its coalition with the ruling DMK, Congress is set to compete for a total of 28 of the 234 assembly seats available in Tamil Nadu. Announcement of the election results is anticipated on May 4, marking a significant moment for the party and its candidates.

The Congress party’s strategy for the assembly elections appears focused on leveraging previous successes and solidifying its presence in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. The decisions around candidacies and the leadership structure are crucial as the party prepares for the electoral battle ahead.
