Suvendu Adhikari Calls for Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s Legacy in Bengal School Curriculum

The CSR Journal Magazine

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has urged for the legacy of Syama Prasad Mookerjee to be integrated into school textbooks across the state beginning in the next academic year. This appeal was made during a commemorative event in Kolkata held to celebrate Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary. Adhikari emphasised the necessity of educating students on Mookerjee’s contributions to the formation of West Bengal and his vision for national cohesion.

During his speech at Mitra Institution, a school where Mookerjee was a student, Adhikari highlighted the significant aspects of Mookerjee’s life that should be included in educational materials. He asserted that the curriculum should feature Mookerjee’s viewpoints on patriotism, his parliamentary addresses, and his time as a Union minister and vice-chancellor of Calcutta University.

Renovation Plans for Mitra Institution

In conjunction with his educational proposals, Adhikari announced plans to renovate Mitra Institution through funding from his local area development fund as an MLA. He expressed a commitment to enhancing the school, which Mookerjee attended from 1906 to 1917, and which he later supported administratively from 1924 to 1938. The Chief Minister stated that his initiatives would reflect a blend of respecting historical heritage while updating the institution for future generations.

Adhikari revealed that he had approached the school education minister to ensure that Mitra Institution is included in the PM Shri programme for restoration, all while preserving its original architectural integrity. He allocated Rs 25 lakh for immediate renovation from his constituency development fund of Rs 1 crore for this financial year, with funds expected to be transferred to the Kolkata Municipal Corporation by August of the same year.

The Chief Minister further proposed that, from the Rs 200 crore earmarked by the Information and Cultural Affairs department for celebrating Mookerjee’s 125th birth anniversary, financial resources should also be directed towards the renovation of Mitra Institution.

Syama Prasad Mookerjee’s Historical Significance

Syama Prasad Mookerjee, born on July 6, 1901, is recognized for his instrumental role in Indian politics as the founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, which later evolved into the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His political career included a persistent campaign for the full integration of Jammu and Kashmir into India, advocating for the revocation of Article 370, which granted special status to the region. This article was subsequently abrogated on August 5, 2019.

Mookerjee’s death occurred under contentious circumstances while he was in detention in Srinagar on June 23, 1953. His legacy remains significant in contemporary Indian political discourse, particularly regarding issues of national unity and integrity. Adhikari’s initiative to include his contributions in school curricula aims to ensure that future generations understand his role in shaping Indian identity and politics.

The inclusion of Mookerjee’s life and ideals in educational settings is intended to inspire students and foster a deeper understanding of their historical and cultural heritage. Adhikari’s efforts signal a renewed focus on integrating influential figures from West Bengal’s past into the academic framework, thus reinforcing their relevance in the present day.
