Surat Man Arrested For Faking Kidnapping To Demand Ransom

The CSR Journal Magazine

A man from Surat, Gujarat, has been apprehended after allegedly staging his own kidnapping to extort Rs 50 lakh from his family. The suspect, 36-year-old Jignesh Talaviya, an accountant residing in the Mota Varachha locality, went missing on June 12, 2026. His wife, Meenakshiben Talaviya, subsequently lodged a missing persons report at the Utran Police Station, which initiated a comprehensive investigation.

The situation escalated when the family received a distressing message that Jignesh had been kidnapped and a ransom of Rs 50 lakh was being demanded. The message included threats indicating that if they contacted law enforcement or attempted to freeze any of their bank accounts, it would result in his death. To further demonstrate the seriousness of the situation, a video showing Jignesh bound and apparently hostage was sent to the family.

Given the alarming nature of the case, Utran police mobilised a large investigative team, employing various techniques, including technical surveillance, CCTV analysis, and human intelligence, to locate Jignesh. His unpredictable movements led authorities to several locations, causing extensive efforts to ascertain his whereabouts.

Investigation Progression

Authorities eventually traced Jignesh to Madhya Pradesh, with various reports suggesting he had been moving through different locations. Additional footage reportedly surfaced, displaying him tied up and issuing threats indicating his body would be returned if the ransom was not paid. Investigators later confirmed that this footage had been filmed in Godhra, contributing to the complexities of the case.

On June 15, 2026, at around 1 pm, police successfully located Jignesh safe at Shiv Hotel in Godhra, situated in Panchmahal district. Upon interrogation, he reportedly confessed that he had orchestrated the entire kidnapping scheme. Evidence suggested that he had sent the threatening messages and created the hostage videos himself, intending to deceive his family into believing he had been abducted.

During questioning, Jignesh demonstrated for the police how he had bound himself and recorded the videos. The investigation revealed he had sustained significant losses, estimated at Rs 50-60 lakh, in options trading on the stock market. This financial distress allegedly motivated the hoax, as he sought to retrieve the lost funds from his family.

Legal Actions and Consequences

Surat’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) highlighted the case’s seriousness and mentioned that every lead was pursued with diligence by the team. Following the confession, police charged Jignesh under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 212, 217, and 233, addressing issues of misleading law enforcement, fabricating evidence, and unnecessarily utilising government resources.

Following his arrest, Jignesh was remanded to custody, with authorities confirming that further investigations are ongoing. The case has drawn significant attention, reflecting the serious legal implications of duplicity and extending the costs associated with such fraudulent actions on police and public resources.

This incident underscores the importance of financial responsibility and the potential repercussions of fraudulent behaviour. As investigations continue, the authorities are expected to maintain rigorous scrutiny to prevent similar acts in the future.
