Sunny Leone Describes Collaboration with Anurag Kashyap on Kennedy as a Transformative Experience

The CSR Journal Magazine

Sunny Leone has stated that her recent film, Kennedy, directed by Anurag Kashyap, could mark a significant turning point in her career and alter her public perception within the film industry. The actress, in a challenging role featured in the neo-noir drama released on ZEE5 on February 20, expressed optimism that this project would pave the way for her to receive more substantial, performance-driven roles.

Character Insights and Storyline

In Kennedy, Leone portrays a character named Charlie, whom she describes as enigmatic and nuanced, embodying both fragility and strength. Charlie becomes involved with Uday Shetty, a former police officer turned contract killer, depicted by Rahul Bhat. The narrative unfolds around Uday’s dual existence as a cab driver while he secretly executes assignments for a corrupt police commissioner, all the while grappling with personal loss and a fragmented family, as he seeks redemption in a city that keeps reminding him of his past.

Initial Approach and Emotional Journey

Leone shared that Kashyap initially contacted her husband and manager, Daniel Weber, to discuss the role. Weber encouraged Kashyap to speak directly with her about it. “I never in a million years thought that he was going to call me and say, ‘Hey, I’ve a part, will you come in for an audition?’ I was blown away by just the offer,” Leone remarked. She revealed that the offer made her feel nervous but also excited about the opportunity to participate in a project that she felt was more significant than anything she had previously undertaken.

Collaboration and Positive Atmosphere

Leone expressed that working with Kashyap was akin to a dream come true, emphasizing her disbelief until she arrived on set. She valued the supportive atmosphere during filming and highlighted the personal connection they developed. “Anurag sir and I shared some very special moments together, discussing our pasts and various life stories. I felt seen and heard, and that emotional safety was crucial for my performance,” she noted. Leone emphasized the importance of this kind of support, stating that it enabled her to fully engage in her role.

Kennedy’s Ensemble Cast and Audience Expectations

The film also features performances by Mohit Takalkar, Megha Burman, Aamir Dalvi, Abhilash Thapliyal, and Karishma Modi in pivotal roles. Collectively, the cast promises an intense and gripping experience for viewers, which Leone believes will significantly enhance her career trajectory. She noted that many industry colleagues have expressed confidence that Kennedy would serve as a defining project for her professional journey.
