The CSR Journal Magazine

Mercedes-Benz is preparing to introduce the GLC Electric in India on November 4. This new electric SUV will be assembled locally at the Chakan facility in Pune and will debut in the 400 4MATIC variant. Bookings for the model are expected to commence in the first week of October, marking a significant expansion of Mercedes-Benz’s electric vehicle offerings in the country.

The GLC Electric is anticipated to be a key addition to the luxury electric vehicle segment in India. It features a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, a substantial claimed driving range, and advanced in-car technology, making it a noteworthy entry in the market.

Specifications and Practicality

The GLC Electric measures 4,845mm in length, 1,913mm in width, and 1,644mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,972mm, which is 84mm longer than its petrol counterpart. This extended wheelbase reportedly enhances rear legroom by 47mm, improving passenger comfort.

In terms of storage, the SUV provides a boot capacity of 570 litres, expandable to 1,740 litres when the rear seats are folded down. Additionally, a front luggage compartment offers 128 litres of space. Despite being electric, the GLC Electric maintains a towing capacity of up to 2.4 tonnes and a drawbar load of 100kg, with a kerb weight of 2,535kg.

Interior Features and Technology

The interior of the GLC Electric is highlighted by the 99.3cm (39.1-inch) MBUX Hyperscreen, which seamlessly integrates the digital instrument cluster, central infotainment display, and front passenger screen. The vehicle is equipped with the fourth-generation MBUX infotainment system, incorporating artificial intelligence features from Microsoft and Google.

This system allows for complex, multi-turn conversations through its Multi Agent Approach, while Google’s Automotive AI Agent enhances navigation capabilities. Another innovative feature is the SKY CONTROL panoramic roof, which can switch between transparent and opaque settings and display illuminated stars through ambient lighting.

Safety and driver-assistance technologies are also prominent in the GLC Electric. It includes the MB.DRIVE suite, which utilises inputs from numerous sensors and cameras to provide features such as adaptive cruise control and automated parking. An optional Vegan Package is available, featuring materials certified by The Vegan Society.

Performance and Charging Capabilities

The GLC 400 4MATIC variant will be powered by a 94kWh NMC battery pack, delivering a combined output of 489bhp and 800Nm of torque. The SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in approximately 4.3 seconds, with a top speed of 210kmph. Mercedes-Benz claims a maximum WLTP range of 715km, with the official range varying based on driving conditions.

Charging capabilities include support for DC fast charging at up to 330kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10 to 80 per cent in about 22 minutes. Under optimal conditions, a 10-minute charge can add up to 305km of WLTP range. Standard charging is available at 11kW AC, with an optional 22kW AC charger.

Suspension and Driving Technology

The GLC Electric features AIRMATIC air suspension with intelligent control, enhancing ride comfort and handling. Buyers may also opt for rear-wheel steering, which improves manoeuvrability by reducing the turning circle from 12.1 metres to 11.2 metres.

Additionally, the SUV includes a One-Box braking system that combines regenerative and conventional braking, capable of delivering up to approximately 300kW of recuperation. For off-road capabilities, it is equipped with a TERRAIN mode and a transparent-bonnet function that provides a view of the ground beneath the vehicle.

Market Position and Expected Pricing

The GLC Electric’s local assembly in India is expected to enhance its competitive positioning within the luxury electric SUV market. Pricing details will be announced during the launch on November 4. This model is set to reinforce Mercedes-Benz’s presence in the premium electric vehicle segment, offering a combination of performance, range, and advanced technology.
