Study Reveals Gender Disparities in Unpaid Domestic Work, Impacting Women’s Career Advancement

The CSR Journal Magazine

The conclusion of the office day does not signify the end of work for many professionals. After shutting down their laptops and commuting home, individuals often find themselves facing a multitude of household responsibilities. These tasks can include preparing dinner, washing clothes, grocery shopping, paying bills, and cleaning the house. For those living with families, additional duties such as caring for children or elderly parents can further complicate the evening routine. Meanwhile, professionals living alone must manage these chores independently, without the support of a partner or family member.

In households where both partners work, the division of responsibilities can lead to ongoing negotiations about who will handle which tasks. This scenario exemplifies what is often referred to as the “invisible second shift,” which encompasses the unpaid work that begins once the formal workday concludes. The burden of these domestic responsibilities can be significant, particularly for women, who are often expected to take on a larger share of household duties.

According to India’s Time Use Survey 2024, released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, women reportedly spend an average of 289 minutes daily on unpaid domestic services, while men contribute only 88 minutes. Additionally, women dedicate 137 minutes to unpaid caregiving compared to 75 minutes for men. These statistics highlight the persistent gender gap in unpaid work and underscore the amount of time households invest in activities that frequently go unrecognised as labour.

Impact on Career Choices

The demands of unpaid work can significantly affect professional decisions, particularly for women who bear caregiving responsibilities. A survey conducted by Indeed India in May 2026 revealed that 83 per cent of women surveyed had refrained from applying for jobs they believed would be challenging to balance with their caregiving roles. This reluctance can limit career advancement and opportunities for women in the workforce.

Research published in The British Journal of Social Work in July 2024, utilising data from India’s 2019 Time Use Survey, indicated that an additional hour of unpaid care work was linked to a 38 per cent decrease in the likelihood of employment among women. These findings illustrate how domestic responsibilities can hinder women’s professional opportunities and overall career progression.

As the workforce evolves, it is crucial to recognise the impact of unpaid work on employment prospects. The intersection of domestic duties and career ambitions presents a challenge that requires attention and action from both employers and policymakers.

Addressing Work-Life Balance

The discourse surrounding work-life balance typically centres on flexible hours, reduced meetings, and shorter commutes. However, it is equally important to consider the responsibilities that arise after employees log off for the day. Access to affordable domestic assistance, childcare, and eldercare services, as well as flexible working arrangements, can significantly alleviate the burden of unpaid work.

Encouraging a more equitable distribution of household responsibilities is essential for fostering a supportive environment for all employees. By addressing these issues, organisations can help ensure that staff members are not only able to fulfil their professional obligations but also manage their personal responsibilities effectively.

Ultimately, the experience of the second shift varies among individuals, but the core issue remains consistent: after dedicating hours to earning a living, employees must still find the time and energy to maintain their homes and personal lives. Recognising and addressing this reality is vital for promoting a healthier work-life balance for all professionals.
