Struggling to find candidate: Prashant Kishor Criticises BJP Over Candidate Search for Bankipur Assembly Bypoll

The CSR Journal Magazine

Prashant Kishor, the founder of the Jan Suraaj Party (JSP), has commented on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) recent decision to replace its candidate for the Bankipur Assembly by-election, suggesting that this reflects a shift in the political atmosphere. Kishor indicated that citizens in the area are increasingly moving beyond traditional caste and religion-based politics. He remarked that the BJP appears to be struggling to find a suitable candidate for a region once deemed a stronghold.

Kishor described the situation as indicative of the strength of democracy, stating that the BJP’s leaders have retreated in response to the populace’s changing preferences. He noted that the constituency, previously characterised as an unwavering BJP bastion, is now facing challenges in garnering support.

Public Sentiment Towards BJP and Governance

During his remarks, Kishor expressed his belief that the BJP has misinterpreted the nature of public support. He shared his observations that the community’s mood has shifted, citing dissatisfaction with the government’s performance. He referred to a perceived betrayal of public trust, stating that elections in November 2025 had led to unfulfilled promises, and the situation facing citizens has worsened.

Kishor outlined several grievances voiced by voters, including the removal of names from ration cards, delays in student credit card payments, an increase in gas cylinder prices, and inadequate drainage maintenance despite the onset of monsoon rains. He stressed that these issues have contributed to growing dissatisfaction among the electorate.

Furthermore, Kishor argued that the BJP’s earlier victories were primarily a result of voters’ fear of Lalu Prasad Yadav, leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), rather than genuine support for the ruling party’s policies. He claimed that with the emergence of new alternatives, voter sentiment is shifting away from the BJP.

Details of Candidate Changes and Upcoming Elections

On July 11, the BJP announced Neeraj Kumar Sinha as its candidate for the Bankipur by-election, following the withdrawal of Abhishek Kumar Sinha, who cited family reasons for his decision to step down. Bihar BJP president Sanjay Saraogi extended congratulations to Neeraj Kumar Sinha during a ceremony at the party office in Patna.

Expressing appreciation for the party’s leadership, Sinha conveyed his confidence in achieving a significant victory in the bypoll. He detailed his journey within the BJP, including roles as booth mantri, mandal president, and district vice-president within the youth wing. He emphasised a commitment to rallying support from party members and the public.

Abhishek Kumar Sinha, before his exit from the race, made a public announcement regarding his decision. He reiterated his dedication to the party while expressing regret about his inability to contest. In a letter submitted to the Bihar BJP president, he conveyed gratitude for being selected as the NDA candidate and expressed his desire to continue serving the party.

In addition to the Bankipur seat, the BJP announced Ashutosh Tiwari as its candidate for the Datia Assembly by-election in Madhya Pradesh. The Election Commission of India revealed the timetable for bypolls across three constituencies in Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, including key seats such as Bankipur, Datia, and Manjalpur. Candidates have until July 13 to file nominations, with scrutiny occurring on July 14 and the option to withdraw candidatures available until July 16. Voting is scheduled for July 30, and vote counting will take place on August 3.
