The highly anticipated film ‘Stree 3’ is now confirmed for a 2028 release, according to producer Dinesh Vijan. This announcement came during the FICCI Frames 2026 event, where Vijan revealed that the sequel would change from its previously planned release on August 13, 2027. The reasoning behind this delay is primarily due to director Amar Kaushik focusing on another project titled ‘Mahavatar’, which Vijan has called Maddock Films’ most ambitious undertaking so far.

Vijan stated that Kaushik’s involvement is crucial to the ‘Stree’ franchise. The director is expected to begin filming ‘Mahavatar’ by the end of January 2026 and complete it by June of the same year. Once that project wraps up, preparations for ‘Stree 3’ will commence, pushing its production towards late 2026. Although Vijan did not specify an exact date for the ‘Stree 3’ release, hints were dropped suggesting it may arrive during major holidays such as Independence Day or Christmas. This indicates a clear intention to position the film as a festive blockbuster.

Unfolding the Storyline of ‘Stree 3’

Dinesh Vijan offered a glimpse into the narrative direction of ‘Stree 3’. While the script has reportedly been completed, he cautioned audiences against forming preconceived notions about the film. He emphasised that fans should “remove everything you think you know” about the upcoming storyline. This warning hints at unexpected plot developments that may diverge from audience expectations.

Vijan reassured fans that the essence of what they love about ‘Stree’ will remain intact, even while the beginning and ending promise to be distinct revelations. Despite keeping the full plot under wraps, Vijan’s enthusiasm about the project is evident. Rajkummar Rao, a lead actor in the franchise, contributed to the discussion by reflecting on the initial success of ‘Stree’. He shared how the first film emerged as a small, independent project but quickly gained momentum thanks to a solid narrative and Kaushik’s comedic vision. Rao’s comments underline the initial modest expectations contrasted with the film’s eventual widespread acclaim.

Rao also recounted the astonishment expressed by Kaushik when ‘Stree 2’ achieved significant box office success, reportedly grossing Rs 857 crore worldwide, including Rs 713 crore in India alone. This success has solidified the franchise’s place in Indian cinema. As for the cast in ‘Stree 3’, Akshay Kumar is expected to reprise his role, which was first introduced in ‘Stree 2’.

The character, linked to a mythological figure within the franchise’s lore, has been described by Vijan as carrying a significant weight akin to that of Thanos in the Marvel series. This suggests an expansive role awaiting Kumar, raising fans’ interest in the evolving narrative landscape.
