Special Fast Track Court Denies Bail Request for Shyamkanu Mahanta in Zubeen Garg Case

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Special Fast Track Court has declined the bail application of Shyamkanu Mahanta, a key suspect in the ongoing investigation into the death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg. The decision was announced on April 30, 2026, following a hearing where both the defence and prosecution presented their arguments. Mahanta had filed the bail plea on April 10, 2026, in hopes of being released while the case is pending.

Justice Sharmila Bhuyan presided over the hearing and listened to the objections raised by Special Public Prosecutor Ziaur Kamar, who argued against granting bail on the grounds of the serious nature of the allegations. Mahanta, who is known as the main organiser of the North East India Festival held in Singapore in the previous year, remains in custody as the legal proceedings unfold.

Details Surrounding Zubeen Garg’s Death

Zubeen Garg, an iconic figure in the Indian music scene, tragically passed away on September 19, 2025. Reports indicate that the singer was found submerged in the waters off Lazarus Island in Singapore after attending a yacht party. Investigations revealed that Garg was “severely intoxicated” at the time of the incident. Eyewitness accounts suggest that he initially donned a life jacket but later removed it and declined a second one that was offered.

Coroner’s court hearings highlighted the concerns of individuals present during the event. Witnesses described watching Garg as he attempted to swim back to the yacht before he became unconscious and began floating face-down. A close associate of Garg who testified during the hearings expressed concerns regarding the singer’s health, particularly alluding to his erratic sleep patterns and a history of seizures he had experienced since 2017.

The investigation into this case is extensive, with the primary chargesheet comprising approximately 2,500 pages and additional supporting documents bringing the total to around 12,000 pages. The complexity of the case is reflective of the serious allegations and the number of individuals involved.

Legal Developments and Arrests

The charges against the implicated individuals are severe, with four suspects, including Mahanta and Sharma, facing allegations of murder under Section 103 of the Indian Penal Code. The case has garnered significant media attention, reflecting the public’s interest in the circumstances surrounding the death of such a celebrated artist.

The ongoing legal proceedings are expected to further unfold as the court continues to evaluate the evidence and arguments presented by both parties. As the investigation continues, the implications of the findings will likely have far-reaching effects on those involved and the music community at large.
