Following a protest that gathered steam earlier in the day, opposition MPs congregated at Makar Dwar within the Parliament complex. They raised placards and began chanting slogans calling for clarification regarding the directives purportedly given to police officers concerning student protesters at Jantar Mantar on July 20. Their demands included accountability from the Centre over perceived excesses against the demonstrators.
Prior to this protest, an official session in Rajya Sabha was on the agenda, where the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, was slated for consideration. The opposition’s demonstrations seemed strategically timed to challenge the ruling party’s agenda and secure attention on pressing issues relevant to student rights and governance.

The opposition claims that the protests emerged in response to an alleged heavy-handed police crackdown on July 20. Congress Rajya Sabha MP Syed Naseer Hussain alleged that the government had failed to uphold earlier commitments made to the protesting students, including promises not to prosecute or arrest any participants.
“These protests occur daily due to the treatment of students and the unfulfilled assurances given by the government during discussions,” Hussain remarked. He asserted that the opposition’s demands were threefold: the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, a formal statement in Parliament addressing police misconduct, and an apology from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Hussain noted that the Delhi Police operates under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry, necessitating Shah’s accountability to the House regarding the police conduct. He queried the control mechanism of the Delhi Police, asking rhetorically from whom they take orders.
