6 Drown in Cauvery River Near K.R. Nagar; ₹5 Lakh Compensation Announced

The tragic incident involving the drowning of six people in the Cauvery River near the Arkeswara Temple in K.R. Nagar, Mysuru, has prompted Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to announce an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh for each victim’s family. The Chief Minister expressed his sorrow over the event, which took place while the individuals were swimming in the river.

In a message on Twitter, Siddaramaiah described the situation as heartbreaking and extended his condolences to the bereaved families. He confirmed that financial assistance would be provided to help them cope with the loss. The announcement marks the government’s response to the distressing situation as families navigate this difficult period.

Local rescuers and officials have been actively involved in addressing the aftermath of the drowning. Reports from the scene indicate that the area has seen an influx of visitors due to the temple’s popularity, highlighting the need for safety measures during recreational activities in and around water bodies.

Vandalism Incident in Haveri

In an unrelated event, authorities are investigating the vandalism of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue on Mahatma Gandhi Road in Haveri city. The statue, measuring approximately two feet, was allegedly defaced overnight. Following the discovery, Haveri Superintendent of Police Yashoda Vantagodi and local police conducted a site inspection.

The damaged statue has since been taken to the city police station for safekeeping. A legal case is currently registered under the jurisdiction of Haveri city police, and officials are pursuing leads, including reviewing CCTV footage. However, it has been reported that the cameras in the vicinity of Gandhi Circle were non-operational at the time of the incident.

The vandalism has sparked a community outcry, reflecting concerns over the preservation of historical and cultural landmarks. Local authorities are encouraging citizens to report any information related to the incident to assist in their investigation.

Car Collision in Yadgiri District

Earlier on April 17, a vehicular collision in the Yadgiri region resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and injuries to two children. The accident involved a car, which was transporting a family, and a VRL bus that was travelling from Bengaluru to Gulbarga. The accident occurred between 9:30 and 9:45 am.

Adgiri Superintendent of Police Pruthvik Shankar provided details regarding the incident. He confirmed that the car was involved in a head-on collision while attempting to overtake a tractor. This resulted in a devastating outcome, with seven of the nine passengers in the car losing their lives. The two injured children were reported to be in critical condition and were transported to the Yadgar Institute of Medical Sciences for medical attention.

The police have since initiated an investigation into the matter, having received a complaint from the families of the victims. Eyewitness accounts have been collected, and further inquiries are being conducted to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the crash. Authorities are committed to ensuring accountability as they work through this tragic event.
