‘Single Largest Party Must Be Invited’: M. A. Baby Questions Governor’s Stand On TVK

The CSR Journal Magazine

General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), M.A. Baby, has stated that the Tamil Nadu Vizhuthugal Katchi (TVK) possesses the potential to establish a majority government when the Assembly convenes. During a recent meeting involving the VCK and leftist parties, Baby articulated that the participants aim to ensure that Vijay, the leader of TVK, receives an invitation to form the government.

Baby further commented that the AIADMK would be unable to muster adequate support, as only a predetermined number of MLAs have been elected by the electorate. He emphasised the impossibility of “importing” legislators from outside, reinforcing the importance of respecting the democratic process. His statements were made in the backdrop of Tamil Nadu’s recent election results.

Conversations Among Stalwarts

In his conversation with ANI, Baby indicated that the CPI(M), along with CPI and VCK, has resolved to continue their discussions within a few hours. The goal is to form a unified response that addresses what he described as a “manufactured stalemate” and adheres to the electoral mandate given by the populace of Tamil Nadu. He advocated for the leading party to be permitted to form the government.

In elaborating on the situation, he noted that while the recent elections did not yield an outright majority, the TVK emerged as the single largest party, albeit short of a clear majority by several seats. He expressed confusion regarding the Governor’s decision to not extend an invitation to TVK to form the government and prove its majority in the Assembly.

Baby stated, “The election results did not produce a party with a majority, but Mr Vijay’s TVK was the single largest party close to securing it. Convention dictates that the largest party should be invited to form the government, with a specific timeframe allowed to demonstrate its majority. The rationale behind the Governor of Tamil Nadu’s decision in this regard is both intriguing and alarming.”

Alliance Building and Support Gatherings

In light of the fractured mandate from the recent elections, Vijay’s TVK has been actively seeking alliances with other political entities to establish a government in Tamil Nadu. The Congress party has conditionally pledged its support to TVK, marking a significant departure from its previous alliance with the DMK.

The alliance currently consists of five Congress MLAs, bringing the total count to 113, yet still falling five votes short of the required majority mark of 118 in the 234-member assembly. The chief of VCK, Thol Thirumavalavan, has announced that his party’s high-level committee would convene in the evening to deliberate on the ongoing political scenario, including the request from TVK for assistance in government formation.

Additionally, both CPI(M) and CPI convened an executive meeting to assess their possible support for Vijay. With both parties holding two seats each, their collaboration could be pivotal. If CPI(M), CPI, and VCK come together alongside Congress, Vijay’s TVK is likely to surpass the majority threshold, successfully establishing a government in this initial endeavour.
