Shocking Gang Rape Inside Kolkata Law College Reignites Fury Over RG Kar Tragedy

Kolkata Police have arrested three men in connection with an alleged gang rape that reportedly took place inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College in Kasba on the evening of June 25. The accused include one former student and two current students of the college.

When did the Incident Took Place?

According to reports police said, the incident occurred between 7:30 pm and 10:50 pm on June 25. Following a complaint lodged by the victim, the Kasba Police Station registered a First Information Report (FIR) and promptly began an investigation. “One of the accused physically committed the rape on June 25 between 7.30 pm and 10.50 pm,” an official confirmed.

The accused have been identified as Monojit Mishra, aged 31, a former unit president of the college, along with Zaib Ahmed, 19, and Pramit Mukherjee (also known as Pramit Mukhopadhyay), 20, both current students. Mishra and Ahmed were apprehended on June 26 near Siddhartha Shankar Sishu Roy Udyan, Talbagan Crossing, Kolkata. Their mobile phones were seized at the time of arrest. The third accused, Mukherjee, was arrested from his residence around 12:30 am on June 27, and his phone was also confiscated.

Police added that the alleged assault took place inside the college building itself. A preliminary medical examination of the victim has been conducted at CNMC, Kolkata. Witness statements have been recorded, and the crime scene is secured, awaiting forensic examination. All three accused are currently in police custody and are expected to be produced before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate in Alipore, South 24 Parganas, on June 27 for remand hearings.

BJP Alleges TMC Role in Kolkata Law College Gang Rape

The case has already sparked political controversy. BJP IT Cell head Amit Malviya described the crime as “horrific” in a post on X (formerly Twitter), alleging that a Trinamool Congress (TMC) member was also involved, though no evidence was provided to support this claim. He wrote: “Horrific! A female law student was gang-raped inside a law college in Kasba, a suburb of Kolkata, on 25th June, by none other than a former student and two college staff members.”

Malviya further referenced the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College 10 months ago, stating: “The horror of RG Kar hasn’t faded… and yet such heinous crimes continue to rise daily in Bengal. Under Mamata Banerjee’s rule, West Bengal has become a nightmare for women. Rape has turned into a routine tragedy.”

In a related statement, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said: “It is an extremely serious matter. I am not aware of it, so let me get an update from the police and I shall speak.”

Opposition Slams TMC

Suvendu Adhikari, leader of the opposition, criticised the ruling TMC government, saying: “Anything can happen in this state. Last year, a junior doctor was raped and murdered in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. There is no safety of women in the state. The chief minister would now say it is a small incident and offer money to the victim. She must resign.”

Responding to the political attacks, TMC spokesperson Jay Prakash Majumdar remarked: “It is unfortunate that the leader of the opposition is launching an attack over a social menace. We should all fight this social menace together.”

The RG Kar case, which shocked the nation, involved the rape and murder of a postgraduate medical trainee whose body was found in a seminar room on the college campus. The autopsy revealed multiple injuries indicating torture before she was strangled. Sanjay Roy, a 33-year-old civic volunteer for Kolkata Police, was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment, a verdict criticised by many, including the victim’s family, who had demanded the death penalty. That case ignited a widespread political and social debate in West Bengal and continues to resonate in ongoing discussions about women’s safety in the state.
