A 47-year-old woman from Beed district in Maharashtra, Ramabai Ranveer, successfully secured first place in a local marathon while running barefoot. This victory is significant for Ramabai, as she intends to use the prize money to support her daughters’ educational needs. The marathon, hosted by a local organisation, featured a prize of Rs 3,000.

Ramabai, a resident of Ambajogai, has faced numerous challenges after the untimely death of her husband in a Mumbai accident. Left to fend for her family, she took the responsibility of raising her two daughters, deeply committed to ensuring they receive a quality education.

In her pursuit of this goal, Ramabai admitted her elder daughter to an academy in Ambajogai and secured employment as a cook there. Her daily routine consists of preparing meals for students while her daughters focus on their studies and prepare for competitive examinations.

The Race Experience

During the marathon, Ramabai participated dressed in a traditional saree, competing against younger runners clad in tracksuits. Initially, she wore slippers, but they became uncomfortable shortly after the race began. Undeterred, she opted to run barefoot, gripping her slippers and continuing forward despite the rough terrain and frigid road conditions.

With determination in her heart, Ramabai managed her attire while pushing ahead of her competitors. Crowds assembled along the route applauded as she crossed the finish line first, showcasing her resilience and strength of spirit.

Referring to her triumph, Ramabai expressed that although there were numerous women in the race, she was resolute about winning. She noted seeing a bright future for her daughters as she raced, planning to allocate the prize money towards purchasing books for their education.

A Supportive Family Dynamic

Adding to the family’s feat, Ramabai’s daughter Pooja participated in the same race, finishing in second place. Pooja had encouraged her mother to enter the competition but did not anticipate such a remarkable finish. Pooja also highlighted her mother’s unwavering dedication, stating that despite considerable hardships, Ramabai has consistently supported them.

Currently, Pooja is preparing for police recruitment, aspiring to become a police officer, while her sister is focusing on banking examinations. The family’s previous reliance was on agricultural work; however, Ramabai’s role as a cook has proven essential for their survival and aspirations.

Seeing Pooja’s commitment to her studies, the academy’s director took a generous step by waiving her fees to further support her ambitions. Ramabai Ranveer’s journey through the marathon symbolises much more than just a race; it represents her relentless effort to secure a better future for her children, showcasing the lengths a mother will go to for her family.
