Shivraj Chouhan Releases First Instalment of Over Rs 10,000 Crore Under PMAY-G for Twelve States

The CSR Journal Magazine

On May 28, 2026, Union Minister for Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the release of the first instalment exceeding ₹10,021.42 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) for twelve states. This announcement was made during a video conference which included Chandra Shekhar Pemmasani, Union Minister of State for Rural Development, as part of the proceedings.

The financial release constitutes a mother sanction, an umbrella approval granted by central government ministries at the beginning of a fiscal year. The mother sanction sets state-wise drawing limits for Centrally Sponsored Schemes (CSS) such as PMAY and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). This initiative aims to facilitate timely fund releases throughout the year.

This release aligns with the government’s ongoing mission to ensure that all homeless individuals in rural areas receive permanent housing, commonly referred to as ‘pucca’ houses. The effort has been a central objective of the PMAY-G since its inception in 2016.

Progress Under PMAY-G

During the video conference, Chouhan highlighted the significant achievements of the scheme. He noted that a total of 3.91 crore housing units have been approved in rural areas, with more than 3.5 crore of these houses already constructed. It was clarified that this data pertains only to the rural housing scheme, differentiating it from the urban housing programme.

The gathering included several state officials, notably Keshav Prasad Maurya from Uttar Pradesh, Kirodi Lal Meena from Rajasthan, Atul Bora from Assam, and Smt. Deepika Pandey from Jharkhand, as well as senior officials from the Ministry of Rural Development. This collective effort aims to facilitate effective implementation of the housing scheme across the states.

Chouhan commended the various innovations adopted by different states to improve the scheme’s execution. He mentioned enhancements like helplines, grievance redressal mechanisms, rainwater harvesting, and livelihood initiatives through self-help groups. These innovations have reportedly expedited the achievement of project objectives.

Focus on Women and Land Issues

The Union Minister placed particular emphasis on women empowerment within the PMAY-G framework. He indicated that approximately 75 per cent of the housing units have been allocated in the names of women or in joint ownership, thereby improving the dignity and social security of women in rural areas.

Chouhan raised concerns regarding the lack of land ownership among some impoverished families, which hampers housing construction. He urged state authorities to take measures to allocate land for these families and ensure they receive the necessary support for completing their housing projects.

Furthermore, he called upon states to expedite the resolution of pending grievances and to facilitate the early completion of ongoing housing projects. He noted that certain states have yet to comply with approvals necessary for meeting targets established for the years 2024-25 and 2025-26, which he advised should be finalised by June 30, 2026.

In conclusion, the PMAY-G initiative remains a significant project aimed at transforming rural India. The government expresses its commitment to ensuring that no eligible family in rural areas is deprived of a permanent home, along with essential amenities for a dignified standard of living.
