In Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, extreme rainfall has resulted in the water levels of the Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers surpassing warning thresholds. This situation has led the district administration to declare a high alert, urging officials to maintain maximum vigilance. Authorities have advised residents living along the riverbanks to consider relocating to safer areas if necessary.

The district administration is taking proactive measures in response to alerts from the India Meteorological Department. Officials have been instructed to ensure readiness across different areas to address any potential natural disasters. Relief and rescue teams are reportedly on standby, equipped with the necessary resources to manage emergencies as they arise.

Vinod Kumar Suman, the Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, elaborated on the measures taken in light of early warnings, stating that preparations were made following earlier orange alerts. He confirmed that these alerts had been issued for certain districts, enabling preventive actions to be implemented before the adverse weather conditions struck.

Current Ground Situation and Infrastructure Damage

Update on the situation indicates that the recent heavy rainfall has resulted in minor infrastructural damage. Suman noted the accumulation of debris near Kanchan Nala, close to Badrinath, as well as reported debris near Guptkashi. These conditions have led to some road closures within the region. Additionally, in Dehradun, waterlogging has been observed in several areas, further complicating the situation.

Suman affirmed that the overall situation remains manageable, with only slight damage reported to one bridge near Ninda ki Chowki. All districts in the region are on alert, maintaining a state of readiness, with ongoing monitoring of conditions. He further noted that rainfall is expected to persist throughout the day and possibly continue over the next three days.

Continuing heavy rainfall has also caused a portion of a newly constructed bridge to collapse on the Dehradun-Paonta Sahib Highway, affecting traffic flow. According to Dehradun District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan, efforts are ongoing to reopen the affected route within the next three to four hours. He emphasised that the structural integrity of the bridge remains secure, and necessary follow-up actions will be taken later.

Impact on Char Dham Yatra

In light of safety concerns, the Char Dham Yatra has been temporarily suspended for Tuesday and Wednesday. This decision follows reports of blocked pilgrimage routes due to landslides and severe weather warnings. The Garhwal Divisional Commissioner confirmed that the yatra will resume once conditions improve and the routes are cleared for safe passage.

The administration is prioritising the safety of pilgrims and has pledged to monitor the situation closely. Roads will be assessed and declared safe before allowing further movement of devotees. Communication will continue to keep the public informed about the developments regarding both the weather and pilgrimage activities.
