Shibayama Tsutomu, the renowned director who significantly influenced the Doraemon franchise for over twenty years, has died at the age of 84. His passing was announced by Ajia-do Animation Works on March 17, 2026, following his death on March 6, caused by lung cancer. The studio expressed deep sorrow over his loss, highlighting his substantial contributions to the anime industry.

Shibayama is often recognized in Japan as the ‘Father of National Animation’ for his pivotal role in cultivating one of the nation’s beloved cultural phenomena. He directed the original Doraemon television series that began in 1979 and went on to oversee 22 feature films related to the franchise, ensuring its legacy across multiple generations.

Career Beginnings and Achievements

Shibayama’s career in animation commenced in 1963 at Toei Animation, and he later transitioned to A Production, which is now known as Shin-Ei Animation. Throughout his illustrious career, he contributed not only to Doraemon but also to various notable titles such as Chibi Maruko-chan, Lupin III, and Majime ni Fumajime Kaiketsu Zorori. His diverse body of work has left a lasting impact on the industry.

Founding Ajia-do Animation Works

In 1978, Shibayama co-founded Ajia-do Animation Works in partnership with Osamu Kobayashi and Michishiro Yamada, further solidifying his influence in the realm of animation. The establishment of this studio allowed him to nurture new talent and contribute to innovative projects within the industry.

Funeral and Memorial Plans

In accordance with the family’s wishes, a private funeral was conducted for Shibayama. The studio has indicated that arrangements for a public memorial event will be made, details of which will be announced in the future.

Acknowledgment of His Contributions

In recognition of his extensive career in animation, Shibayama was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Japan’s Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2012. This accolade reflects his enduring legacy and the considerable influence he had on successive generations of animators and audiences alike.
