CBI Officer Seema Pahuja to Lead Disha Salian Death Investigation

The CSR Journal Magazine

Seema Pahuja, a distinguished officer with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), has been appointed to lead the inquiry into the death of Disha Salian, the former manager of the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput. Pahuja, 59, is currently serving as a Superintendent of Police (SP) within the CBI’s Special Crime Unit in Delhi and has a track record of managing numerous high-profile investigations.

Disha Salian, aged 28, died after falling from a high-rise building in the Malad area of Mumbai on June 8, 2020. This incident occurred just days prior to Rajput’s own tragic death on June 14. Initially, the Mumbai Police treated Salian’s death as suicide; however, a subsequent investigation by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) from Maharashtra found no evidence of foul play.

Prior to this appointment, Pahuja was involved in significant cases, including the 2020 Hathras rape-murder and the Unnao rape case from 2017, which implicated expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar. She has also handled the 2024 rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at RG Kar hospital in Kolkata, and the Gudiya rape-murder case in Shimla from 2017, which concluded with the conviction of the perpetrator.

Renewed Investigation into Disha Salian’s Death

The CBI’s involvement in the Disha Salian case was prompted after her father, Satish Salian, filed an appeal with the Bombay High Court, alleging that his daughter had been raped and murdered, and that evidence related to the case had been concealed. The Bombay High Court ordered on September 2 for the CBI to register a First Information Report (FIR) and initiate a renewed investigation, citing inconsistencies in the initial inquiry.

Following the court’s directive, the CBI registered the FIR on September 13, which includes serious allegations of murder, gang rape, criminal conspiracy, destruction of evidence, and fabrication of records. The agency is required to thoroughly examine the circumstances leading to Salian’s death and reassess the allegations presented.

Significantly, the FIR names several individuals whose involvement needs scrutiny, including Aaditya Thackeray, a leader from the Shiv Sena (UBT), and his father, Uddhav Thackeray, a former Chief Minister of Maharashtra. It also mentions the names of various actors, including Rhea Chakraborty, Dino Morea, and Sooraj Pancholi. However, being cited in the FIR does not imply these individuals have been charged with any offences; the CBI has yet to establish the full extent of their involvement.

Seema Pahuja’s Track Record

Pahuja’s investigative acumen has earned her recognition within the CBI, including a gold medal for Best Investigating Officer in 2021, reflecting her dedication and skill in navigating complex cases. Her expertise in handling sensitive investigations will be pivotal as she leads the fresh inquiry into Salian’s tragic death.

The CBI will ensure a meticulous examination of all available evidence in the Salian case, taking into account the new allegations brought forth by her family. This renewed investigation represents a significant step in seeking clarity and justice regarding the circumstances of her death.

As the CBI embarks on this thorough investigation, the case will be watched closely by both the public and media, underscoring the importance of transparency in the judicial process. The agency is expected to provide updates as the investigation progresses and more information emerges.
