The CSR Journal Magazine

Ashok Kharat, known as ‘Captain’ Kharat, was taken into custody on Thursday by the Nashik Crime Branch following allegations of rape and exploitation under the guise of religious rituals. Authorities stated that he allegedly coerced a 35-year-old married woman by utilizing rituals, claims of divine abilities, and intoxicants, subjecting her to repeated assaults between November 2022 and December 2025. Following the survivor’s complaint, the Maharashtra government established a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by IPS officer Tejaswini Satpute to investigate these serious allegations.

Kharat’s Early Life and Rise to Prominence

Beginning his professional journey in the Merchant Navy, Kharat’s international travels allowed him to become proficient in multiple languages, including approximately fifteen languages from different regions. While serving in the Navy, he delved into numerology and eventually began offering predictions about people’s futures. Over time, he convinced his followers that he embodied the divine essence of Lord Mahadev and claimed expertise in black magic, contributing to the fear and reverence surrounding him. His influence subsequently attracted several political figures seeking his counsel, including notable leaders like Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The nature of his connections extended to Rupali Chakankar, Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women, which became a point of interest as videos featuring both surfaced online.

Connection with Government Officials

While posing as a numerologist, Kharat was frequently consulted by government officials who sought guidance regarding their careers or promotions. In regions such as Pathardi and Gawalani in Ahmednagar district, he reportedly acquired land through partnerships with the wives of some officials. Allegations suggest that he also obtained properties in the names of family members. His dealings included interactions with several political figures, and he was known to lead investigations by providing numerological guidance to police inquiries. His Darbar attracted many officials, further extending his influence.

Coercive Tactics and Exploitation of Women

Kharat allegedly used manipulative tactics to exploit women seeking solutions to personal or professional issues. He reportedly advocated for a ritual called “Yoni Puja” as part of the process for women desiring to conceive. Using this pretext, he engaged in sexual relations with several of his victims, some of whom were subjected to staged marriages. Victims reported having been threatened into compliance, including claims involving the health of their husbands as coercion. Kharat’s expansive network and influence lent him an air of invincibility, allowing him to take advantage of many vulnerable individuals.

Details of Investigation and Arrest

The investigation into Kharat began when a young woman in Shirdi lodged a complaint against an employee, Neeraj Jadhav, who allegedly threatened her with the circulation of compromising photographs. Subsequent inquiries uncovered further allegations against Kharat himself, alongside claims of sexual exploitation from another victim in Nashik. Police investigations, which had also uncovered extortion concerns involving Kharat, led to his arrest at his residence on March 17. This came after prior allegations surfaced that he had himself filed a grievance regarding blackmail over compromising images.

Assets Estimated at Rs 200 Crore

Allegations suggest that Kharat has amassed assets worth around Rs 200 crore over the last fifteen years, largely through his supposed numerological capabilities. Investigative agencies have estimated a range of assets, including land holdings and properties, all acquired in a manner that raises questions about his financial dealings. His portfolio includes prime agricultural land, valuable properties, and a temple complex, all contributing to the significant wealth he allegedly accumulated while operating under the guise of spiritual leadership.
