BMW iX4 Unveiled Globally, Launch Scheduled for March 2027

The CSR Journal Magazine

The BMW iX4 has been officially unveiled as the latest addition to the electric coupe-SUV segment, marking the third model aligned with the company’s innovative Neue Klasse architecture. The launch of the iX4 is planned for March 2027, with initial variants set to include two models: the 40 xDrive and the 50 xDrive. A high-performance model, the iX4 M60 xDrive, is expected to follow soon after.

This model is equipped with the brand’s new-generation 800V Gen6 eDrive technology, which incorporates cylindrical-cell batteries along with updated electric motors and an advanced electronics and software setup. This technological advancement aims to enhance efficiency, accelerate charging times, extend the driving range, and facilitate bidirectional charging.

Design Features of the iX4

The design of the iX4 adheres to the distinctive Neue Klasse aesthetic while showcasing a more pronounced silhouette in comparison to the iX3. Characterised by its lengthy wheelbase, succinct overhangs, and dramatically sloping roofline, the iX4 exemplifies the coupe-SUV style. The front end features BMW’s newly designed kidney grille and twin headlight elements, seamlessly integrated into a cohesive visual treatment.

Performance Specifications of the iX4

The iX4 40 xDrive is powered by dual electric motors generating 275kW (374hp) and 520Nm, enabling it to accelerate from 0-100kph in 5.6 seconds and offering a maximum range of up to 638km. The more powerful 50 xDrive variant features 345kW (469hp) and 645Nm, with a 0-100kph time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 210kph. It utilises a 108.7kWh usable battery, boasting a claimed range of up to 828km.

Both versions are compatible with DC fast charging, with the 50 xDrive capable of handling up to 400kW. According to BMW, just 10 minutes of charging can provide an additional 387km of range for the 50 xDrive, while the 40 xDrive can achieve up to 301km under the same conditions. The performance-focused M60 xDrive produces 450kW (612hp) and 875Nm, achieving 0-100kph in 3.9 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 240kph, while still maintaining a maximum range of around 777km.

The iX4 incorporates a new Heart of Joy high-performance computer along with the BMW Dynamic Performance Control Driving Stack to effectively manage the electric powertrain and vehicle dynamics, offering rapid control responses. The M60 xDrive includes adaptive M suspension, sport steering, and an electronically controlled M locking differential at the rear axle as standard, with the adaptive suspension available as an option on other iX4 variants.

Driver Assistance Systems and Future Launch Details

The new BMW iX4 is equipped with an extensive array of driver-assistance systems, including features like BMW Symbiotic Drive and the Motorway Assistant, which allows for hands-free driving at speeds of up to 130kph on designated routes in markets where this feature is permitted. This addition aims to enhance safety and driving convenience for users.

The iX4 is set to launch globally in March 2027. However, BMW has not yet disclosed specific details regarding the Indian launch, including pricing and variant options for this market.
