Rubio Urges Western Nations to Reconnect with Civilisational Values in Greece

The CSR Journal Magazine

In a recent address delivered in Greece, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasised the need for Western countries to return to what he termed their civilisational roots. Speaking at the historic Acropolis in Athens, he championed nationalism and underscored the importance of maintaining robust alliances among nations.

Rubio’s remarks came during a visit aimed at enhancing economic, energy, and security cooperation with NATO allies. This visit forms part of a larger three-country tour that commenced in Iceland and is set to conclude in Portugal. He used the opportunity to reassure Western partners of the United States’ commitment to support while stressing that Washington would prioritise its own interests.

Throughout his address, Rubio reflected on historical elements he believes originated in Greece, such as curiosity, courage, and ambition. These characteristics, he suggested, have significantly shaped Western civilisation. He argued against what he perceived as a prevailing trend where foreign policy prioritises global interests over national loyalty, drawing lessons from ancient Greek values.

Advocacy for a Strong Partnership with Europe

Rubio stated that the United States aims to foster a vigorous partnership with Europe. He asserted the necessity of crafting alliances capable of addressing contemporary global threats. His speech was not merely diplomatic; it was imbued with a political message aimed at encouraging Europe to adopt what he described as the administration’s visionary outlook for the future.

While advocating for collaboration with Europe, he reiterated that the United States would consistently act in its own interests. He cautioned that the decisions made in the coming decade could have significant implications for the West’s future standing in the world. Rubio’s remarks implied a sense of urgency, emphasising that immediate action is required to maintain global leadership.

Despite acknowledging strains in US-Europe relations, he insisted on the importance of collaborating to strengthen institutional frameworks and alliances to tackle shared threats effectively. His speech reflected a blend of historical references and contemporary political context, indicating a broader aim to rally support for the Trump administration’s policies.

Protests and Political Controversies Surrounding the Visit

Prior to his speech, approximately 1,500 protesters gathered to express their dissent against Rubio’s presence and the ongoing conflict in Iran. Organised by a communist labour union and several left-wing groups, the demonstration included chants of “American killers!” Law enforcement imposed significant road closures in Athens, and similar protests occurred in at least 12 other cities across Greece.

The visit has not been without controversy. Rubio faced questions regarding allegations of misconduct involving US Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle. At a joint press conference, he refrained from directly addressing the issue, stating he would not comment on the matter while in a foreign country, yet affirmed the effective operation of the US embassy in Greece.

Senators Jeanne Shaheen and Gregory Meeks, representing key Democratic positions in foreign relations, have initiated investigations into claims made by The Wall Street Journal concerning Guilfoyle’s alleged improper actions. Allegations suggest she may have exerted undue influence on the Greek government and prioritised specific business interests during her diplomatic engagements.

The tone of Rubio’s presentation and the setting were reminiscent of a campaign event, given his background as a former Republican senator and presidential candidate. His speech, while politically charged, aimed to reinforce the administration’s commitment to strong international relations and the prioritisation of national power.
