Mahindra Set to Launch XUV 3XO CNG on October 15

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mahindra will enhance its compact SUV, the XUV 3XO, by introducing a CNG variant on October 15. This new model will become the fourth powertrain option available, joining the existing petrol, diesel, and electric versions. This initiative positions the XUV 3XO alongside other models, such as the Tata Nexon and Kia Carens Clavis, which also provide multiple fuel types, offering consumers greater flexibility in their choices.

The addition of the CNG version is expected to appeal to a segment of buyers who prefer more sustainable fuel options without transitioning to an electric vehicle. As international and local regulations increasingly encourage lower emissions, this model could cater not only to consumer preferences but also meet stricter fuel-efficiency requirements.

With the CNG launch, Mahindra aims to tap into the growing demand for alternative fuels in India’s automobile market. This strategic move could further solidify the XUV 3XO’s footprint in a competitive landscape.

Technical Specifications and Performance Expectations

The XUV 3XO CNG is anticipated to utilise Mahindra’s 1.2-litre turbocharged MPFi petrol engine, which produces approximately 112bhp and 200Nm in its petrol configuration. However, it is worth noting that the power output may be slightly reduced when the engine runs on CNG. The decision to use the simpler MPFi design rather than the more complex direct-injection engine is expected to facilitate a more cost-effective CNG conversion.

Details pertaining to the CNG tank’s capacity, fuel efficiency, and gearbox options remain undisclosed, but information is anticipated closer to the vehicle’s launch date. The factory-fitted CNG system is expected to ensure a seamless transition from petrol to CNG operation, although the precise specifications will soon be revealed.

Another significant factor is the integration of the CNG tank within the vehicle’s design. The XUV 3XO has a modest boot space, and accommodating a CNG cylinder may further limit luggage capacity. Mahindra might consider various configurations, such as a possible dual-cylinder setup or an alternative underfloor arrangement to optimise storage space.

Versatile Powertrain Line-Up for Enhanced Buyer Appeal

The introduction of the CNG variant will complement the existing petrol, diesel, and electric powertrains available for the XUV 3XO. The petrol options include a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 109bhp, and a more robust 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 129bhp, both available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed torque-converter automatic transmission. Additionally, a 1.5-litre diesel engine outputting 115bhp is available with a choice of either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automated manual transmission.

The electric variant of the XUV 3XO, which debuted earlier this year, features a 39.4kWh battery capable of achieving a range of up to 285km. This variant’s electric motor generates 150bhp and 310Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from 0-100kmph in roughly 8.3 seconds, showcasing the vehicle’s robust performance credentials.

With the new CNG model, Mahindra aims to reinforce the XUV 3XO’s market presence, especially in the burgeoning sector of alternative fuel vehicles. The anticipated announcement regarding specifications, pricing, and availability of different variants is expected around the debut date of October 15, thereby informing prospective buyers about their options.
