Second Autopsy Confirms Twisha Sharma’s Death By Suicide, States CBI

The CSR Journal Magazine

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has reported that a second post-mortem examination by a medical board from AIIMS Delhi has verified that Twisha Sharma died by suicide due to hanging. The autopsy revealed no signs of injury that could indicate assault or a struggle before her body was discovered on May 12 at her in-laws’ residence in Bhopal. The examination, conducted on May 24, established asphyxia from hanging as the cause of death, with a gymnastic belt identified as the instrument used.

The CBI noted that both the initial and subsequent autopsy reports concluded that Twisha’s death resulted from hanging. This second examination took place following claims from the family of the 33-year-old victim that the first report might have been altered.

Allegations of Mental Cruelty

The CBI’s investigation has uncovered that Twisha allegedly experienced prolonged mental cruelty from her husband, Samarth Singh, who is currently incarcerated. The agency claims that Samarth consistently demeaned and harassed her, including derogatory comments about her past relationships. Additionally, they indicated that Twisha’s mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, would provoke Samarth and protect him whenever Twisha voiced her grievances.

The chargesheet also highlights that both Samarth and Giribala subjected Twisha to significant psychological distress, even during difficult periods, such as when she cared for her father following a heart attack in March. Allegations have also surfaced regarding Giribala’s mistreatment of her elder son’s former wife concerning childbearing and employment matters.

Reports indicate that Twisha discovered she was pregnant on April 16, prompting a hospital visit with Samarth the next day. The CBI stated that this pregnancy was not planned, leading Twisha to contemplate her options regarding continuation.

Dispute Over Pregnancy and Subsequent Events

The investigation outlines that Twisha faced harassment after Samarth notified his mother about the pregnancy, leading to conflict and further mental distress. Following these confrontations, Twisha travelled to her parents’ home in Nasirabad, Rajasthan, where she conveyed her struggles with Samarth and Giribala.

Twisha later resolved to terminate her pregnancy. On April 30, she sought medical assistance at Bansal Hospital in Bhopal, expressing her desire to not continue with the pregnancy. Upon her consent, she received medication prescribed for a medical termination. Notably, on the same day, Twisha consulted with a psychiatrist, who noted her anxiety regarding the pregnancy and the overall situation.

Twisha communicated to her mother that she felt her in-laws were attempting to label her as mentally unstable. She later reiterated her decision to abort on May 6, taking the first dose of medication. The following day, she reached out to her mother, requesting her return, expressing confusion about her relationship with Samarth. The CBI noted her in-laws’ dissatisfaction with her decision to terminate the pregnancy, insisting she continue it instead.

Counselling and Final Hours

On May 12, Twisha and Samarth participated in a counselling session, having initially planned for her to return to her parents’ home. Twisha acquiesced to the session after Samarth agreed to attend. During the meeting, he described her behaviour as impulsive and suggested that the pregnancy caused changes in her state of mind. Following the session, Samarth was advised to foster patience and better communication.

After returning home, Twisha reportedly felt neglected by both Samarth and Giribala and told her mother of her intention to leave Bhopal permanently. The CBI has reconstructed Twisha’s final hours using evidence from CCTV footage, phone records, and messages. At approximately 9.20 PM on May 12, Twisha was in contact with her sister-in-law, indicating distress over Samarth’s reaction to her requests.

Subsequent to these communications, she sent a message expressing a desire for solitude and planned to have her belongings collected. Around 9.40 PM, she was seen alone headed toward the terrace. Subsequently, following unanswered calls, her mother sought assistance from Giribala, and Twisha’s body was later taken to AIIMS Bhopal, where she was pronounced dead shortly before 11 PM.
