The Indian Embassy in China has requested that families of the Indians who have been reported missing since the flash flood on August 26 provide DNA samples to assist in identification efforts. This announcement was made on Monday, following confirmation from Chinese authorities that they are now in a position to accept such samples from the families of Indian nationals involved in the disaster.

In an official press release, the embassy indicated that families wishing to submit DNA data should follow the internationally recognised CODIS format for their submissions. The embassy assured that once the DNA information is received, it would be forwarded to the relevant Chinese authorities for comparison. The embassy has stated that upon confirmation of any match, they will notify the involved family members accordingly.

Collection and Specification of Samples

The embassy has outlined that blood samples can be obtained from the parents, spouse, or children of the missing individuals. It is preferable for multiple samples to be collected from siblings when the missing person has no living parents or children. Furthermore, samples may also be taken from other maternal and paternal relatives, such as cousins, along with the appropriate relationship details.

In terms of specifications, the embassy has highlighted that DNA STR data is essential for all samples. Additional data, including Y-STR markers, is required for male relatives. All data must also be organised and stored following the international CODIS standards. Clear labelling is necessary, indicating the nationality, name, passport number of the missing individual, and the corresponding details of the family member providing the sample, including a sample ID number.
