The ongoing investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the RG Kar rape and murder case remains a focus of public concern, according to Panihati BJP MLA Ratna Debnath. She stated that those found guilty will face appropriate action as the inquiry is still in progress. This statement comes as part of her response to allegations connecting Mamata Banerjee’s nephew, Dr. Abesh Banerjee, to the incident, which took place in 2024 at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

Debnath emphasised that the investigation has not concluded, indicating that all involved will be subject to scrutiny. She reassured the public that if guilt is established, those responsible would be punished through the judicial system. Asserting the importance of adhering to legal procedures, she mentioned that the investigation had not reached a finality.

In regard to demands for resignations within the health sector, Debnath reiterated her resolve to ensure accountability. She affirmed that Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam will also fall under the investigation’s purview, suggesting that previous and current governmental actions would be reviewed.

Allegations Against Key Officials Under Scrutiny

Debnath further elaborated on her previous calls for Nigam’s resignation, stating that her concerns had been raised during both the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) administration and the current government. She insisted that the investigation would not overlook any government official involved in the case, including past health ministers.

This assertion aligns with the public’s rising demand for accountability, particularly given the sensitive nature of the crime that has drawn significant attention nationwide. The MLA indicated that the law must be upheld and that those found guilty through due process would be prosecuted accordingly.

The case has unearthed allegations of an urgent cremation concerning the victim’s body, which has intensified scrutiny over procedural errors. On 5th September, notable developments included the arrest of former Panihati Municipality Chairman Somnath Dey in Bengaluru, who was taken into custody for three days by police in connection with the allegations surrounding the cremation.

The assault and murder of the postgraduate trainee doctor, which occurred on August 9, 2024, has sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice across the nation.
