Robert Prevost Elected as Pope Leo XIV, Becomes First American Pontiff

Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost has been elected as the new pope, taking the name Leo XIV and making history as the first American to lead the Roman Catholic Church. The announcement was made on Thursday evening from the balcony of St Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City, where thousands of faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square to witness the momentous occasion.

The election came after the passing of Pope Francis last month. The conclave, which is the traditional gathering of cardinals to choose a new pope, began on Wednesday inside the Sistine Chapel. A total of 133 cardinals from 70 different countries participated in the voting, reflecting the growing diversity of the Catholic Church. After three rounds of voting, white smoke was seen rising from the chapel’s chimney, signalling to the world that a new pope had been chosen.

Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo XIV, aged 69, was born in Chicago to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian heritage. He was ordained as a priest in 1982 and soon moved to Peru, where he worked for many years among the underprivileged and marginalised. His experience as a parish priest, seminary teacher, and later as bishop in Chiclayo, northern Peru, has given him a reputation for compassion and bridge-building. He also holds Peruvian citizenship, making him a unique figure with deep connections to both North and South America.

In his first address as pope, Leo XIV paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, recalling his courage and humility. He spoke in Italian, Spanish, and Latin, calling for peace, unity, and hope. “Peace be with all of you! May this message reach your hearts, your families, and all people, wherever they may be,” he said, receiving warm applause from the crowd.

Pope Leo XIV is known for his moderate views and commitment to social justice. While he is considered progressive on many social issues, he remains conservative on certain church doctrines. His background working with the underprivileged in Latin America and his ability to speak multiple languages are seen as strengths that will help him guide the Church in a rapidly changing world.

The conclave that elected him was one of the shortest in recent memory, concluding in less than two days. Many observers had expected an Italian or Filipino cardinal to be chosen, but the election of an American has been welcomed with excitement in both the United States and Peru.

As Pope Leo XIV begins his papacy, Catholics around the world are looking to him for leadership and guidance. His experience and inclusive approach suggest that he will continue the compassionate legacy of Pope Francis while bringing his own unique perspective to the role of the Holy Father.
