RIP iPad Mini? Apple’s First Foldable iPhone Set to Replace Tablets in 2026

The CSR Journal Magazine

For nearly seven years, Apple fans have been eager for the launch of a foldable iPhone, especially after Samsung introduced its initial foldable smartphone. Although Apple has not formally confirmed any plans for such a device, various reports indicate that it could be released later this year. In his recent Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg highlighted that the anticipated foldable iPhone might mark the most substantial transformation in the history of the iPhone. He noted that this would represent the first real change in the iPhone’s form factor.

Innovative Design Features

According to Gurman, the new device is expected to showcase an entirely fresh design for Apple, despite it resembling features already seen in rival products. Gurman mentioned that utilizing a foldable phone can enhance the video viewing experience significantly compared to standard smartphones, while also maintaining portability when the device is folded. In a detailed overview from March 11, he provided insights into what consumers might anticipate from the foldable iPhone, suggesting it could deviate from existing foldable models in terms of aspect ratio.

Display Specifications

The internally foldable screen is anticipated to be comparable in size to an iPad mini, while the external display could resemble the size of a small iPhone. Reports, including one from MacRumors, have indicated that the foldable iPhone might possess a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer screen. Gurman also emphasized that the operating system would be iOS rather than iPadOS, as Apple plans to maintain the simpler multitasking capabilities seen previously on iPads. This involves redesigning app layouts and adapting core applications to feature sidebars, akin to those in many iPad apps.

Multitasking Capabilities

While the foldable iPhone may allow the use of two apps side by side, it is unlikely to support multiple window operations like the iPad mini. This design strategy aligns with those employed by Samsung and Google in their foldable devices. Gurman pointed out that Apple appears to be addressing two prominent issues observed in current foldable models: the limited width of internal screens and the visible crease. To combat these challenges, the company is exploring advanced display technologies aimed at minimizing the crease, though it may not be entirely eradicated. Additionally, efforts are underway to bolster durability for repeated opening and closing of the screen.

Camera Innovations and Security Features

The forthcoming foldable iPhone may incorporate a small hole-punch cutout for the front camera on the external display, moving away from the pill-shaped notch present in existing iPhones. Nonetheless, it is still set to retain the Dynamic Island interface for system alerts and app notifications. Furthermore, the device could replace Face ID with a Touch ID integrated into the side button. The internal display may also utilize a hole-punch camera, as Apple reportedly found that under-display camera technology adversely affects image quality.

Specifications and Performance

Expected camera and hardware configurations for the foldable iPhone include two rear cameras—one main lens and an ultra-wide lens—amounting to one less than today’s premium iPhone models. Reports suggest that both lenses could offer a 48-megapixel resolution. Additionally, leaks have indicated that the device may run on an A20 chipset coupled with 12GB of RAM. The dimensions of the foldable iPhone are rumored to measure approximately 7.6 to 7.8 inches when opened and about 5.5 inches when folded, marking a significant evolution in Apple’s smartphone offerings.
