Residents Sleep on Beaches in Mumbai Amid Heatwave

The CSR Journal Magazine

Mumbai is facing an ongoing heatwave, leading numerous residents to resort to the unusual practice of sleeping on local beaches at night. As the city anticipates widespread monsoon relief, many individuals are choosing the sandy shores to escape the stifling heat exacerbated by prolonged power outages. This trend is particularly evident in Versova, a bustling coastal neighbourhood.

Families residing in densely populated slum areas of Versova have been spending nights on the beach in response to the oppressive heat and humidity. Dwellings with tin roofs and inadequate ventilation often trap heat throughout the day, rendering homes unbearably hot long after sundown. Sleep on the beach provides a much-needed respite from these conditions.

The situation in Versova reflects a larger issue facing the city as many areas are experiencing an extended period of high temperatures and humidity. The southwest monsoon has arrived in other parts of India but has been slow to reach Mumbai. As the city remains under a heavy blanket of moisture-laden air, the apparent temperature, or “feels-like” temperature, has soared well above the actual readings.

Coping with Extreme Weather Conditions

The ongoing heatwave poses significant challenges for residents, particularly due to the rising humidity affecting the body’s ability to cool itself. As sweat evaporates less efficiently, individuals find it increasingly difficult to cope with the oppressive temperatures. This has led to a marked increase in the demand for electricity, as more residents rely on air conditioning, fans, and coolers.

On June 8, 2026, Mumbai recorded an unprecedented peak power demand of 4,608 megawatts, surpassing previous consumption records. This surge in energy demand has been driven by numerous factors including soaring temperatures, rapid urbanisation, and a growing dependency on cooling appliances. The rising power consumption is currently placing additional stress on the city’s electricity distribution network during a time of heightened energy use across India.

The increasing reliance on electrical cooling solutions has raised concerns about the sustainability of power supply, particularly given the current climate conditions and urban expansion. Residents are left hoping for improvements in both weather and electricity availability.

Forecast for Rainfall in Mumbai

Fortunately, there may be relief on the horizon for the beleaguered residents of Mumbai. Meteorologists have indicated that significant changes in weather conditions are anticipated within the next 48 hours. Starting on Sunday night, an influx of moisture from the Arabian Sea is expected to bolster rainfall across the region.

Forecasters predict that rain intensity will gradually increase on June 21 and 22 as monsoon winds gain strength. This enhanced moisture influx could lead to widespread rainfall, which will hopefully lower daytime temperatures and improve conditions for those currently sleeping outdoors.

For many individuals who have turned to the beach for solace, the arrival of consistent monsoon rains is a much-anticipated event. With each passing day, the hope for cooler temperatures grows stronger, providing a sense of optimism for respite from the current heatwave.
