Ranga-Billa Case from 1978 Influences Bobby Deol’s Childhood Memories

The CSR Journal Magazine

The recent release of the true-crime drama Raakh has reignited discussions surrounding the infamous Ranga-Billa case of 1978. Bobby Deol, in a 2025 interview, shared how this event profoundly influenced his upbringing. He revealed that a close friend from school had been kidnapped by the notorious pair, who were responsible for a spate of crimes that instilled fear across India during that era.

In the interview on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Deol recounted the harrowing experience of his friend, who managed to escape after a twist of fate. He stated that due to the confusion between the two criminals, known as Ranga and Billa, his friend was able to flee. Ranga reportedly abandoned him at a paan shop just as police were closing in on them. The shopkeeper, noticing his distress, offered to help and guided him back home.

Changes in Bobby Deol’s Upbringing

The near-miss involving his friend had significant ramifications on Deol’s childhood. He indicated that after the news of the kidnapping reached his family, his father, Dharmendra, enforced strict restrictions on him. The actor reflected on how this incident altered his freedom, explaining that he was seldom allowed out of the house following the event.

Deol narrated that he essentially became a prisoner of his own home, stating, “I returned from school and that was it. I even learned cycling inside my house.” He shared that his social life took a hit, particularly during college, as he was not permitted to attend gatherings that his friends organised. The imposition of a 9 pm curfew further limited his interactions outside the home.

These experiences marked a stark contrast to the life he might have led had the kidnapping not occurred. Deol’s reflections serve as a poignant reminder of the psychological impact that crime can have on families and young individuals, shaping their day-to-day experiences and relationships.
